1/3. A revisit to Melmerby Fell as it gave a great way to drop down onto Cuns Fell and Catterpallot Hill. Then straight down South West from Catterpallot finding useful gates all the way down to the footpath which leads back to Memerby via Gale Hall Farm. A nice round achieved in 3.5 hours on a warm February day. Good views. | nickywood1 | 18/02/2024 |
Second Nuttall of the day, easy enough going, sadly no views due to fog. | simocity | 11/02/2024 |
From the free parking area at Hartside cross to the North to reach the Nuttall summits of Fiends fell, Melmerby fell and the Dewey top of Cuns fell(my last English Dewey), a Seven and Three quarter mile walk returning by the same route as the Aglionby beck which the Maiden way cross's would have been in spate. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 11/12/2023 |
1 of 3 from melmerby road end. | robertphillips | 07/10/2023 |
Nuttalls route: from A686 at Hartside Cross via Maiden Way- Melmerby Fell and Fiends Fell. Extremely hot day- hottest of the year according to Met Office. Lots of shooters out on the fells. Poor grouse. | Lazylizzie | 09/09/2023 |
From Hartside Pass via Fiends Fell - with GW | JohnIvor | 17/05/2023 |
Parked at Hartside Summit. It was cold with heavy snow showers. Cloud base above summits but below in the showers. About an inch of snow on the summit. Relatively easy but quite boggy walk over Fiends Fell and Knapside Hill and on to summit cairn and nearby stone marking summit. Did get views of a very snowy Lake District. Time taken 2 hours for 5.8 miles and just 700 feet of ascent. | isabelle | 12/04/2023 |
A circular walk from end of minor road above Melberby NY 624 369 (verge parking for 3 cars). Up the public FP, then parallel to wall to Knapside Hill, SE along watershed to Melmerby Fell. Along ridge for another 500m, then steeply down SW from double gate at 652 372 to Cuns Fell. Continue WSW to access land boundary wall, over gate and quick out + back to Catterpallot Hill. Back along track by boundary wall to outward footpath. 10km with 630m ascent inn 3 hours. | silverwolf_alan | 24/10/2022 |
Hartside Cross - Fiend's Fell - Melmerby Fell - Hartside Cross. | Mark Jackson | 26/08/2022 |
Cloud and wind in forecast but nothing much came of it, just a touch of cloud on very top. From road end above Melmerby to Melmerby Fell. Followed track to its end at a wall fairly high up, then straightforward walk on bits of path and short grass. Might have been more difficult in cloud. | dickscroop | 12/07/2022 |
11.25 miles 2068ft walk. Melmerby Fell from Ousby. | stephenbuda | 05/07/2022 |
From Hartside Summit. Fiends Fell and Melmerby Fell. Back to car park for lunch. Just as the heavens opened. | Longwojo | 20/05/2022 |
1/3 Melmerby Fell and Fiends Fell (repeats) then over the Alston road to Black Fell. Three Nutalls on an LDWA group walk ably led by Caroline Roy. Jolly chilly with a little snow on the ground but a grand day.Valley up from Melmerby is glorious. | nickywood1 | 03/04/2022 |
This was day 3 of a 6 day backpack in the Northern Pennines and having camped near Fiend's Fell, it was a very straightforward walk to visit Melmerby Fell, the first peak of the day. | morgs4mountains | 23/03/2022 |
Fine views of lakeland peaks with low mist increasing in the valleys towards sunset | Nick Canute | 15/01/2022 |
From Row via field path to Gale Hall then Miekle Awfell to Melmerby Fell 709m then Green Fell to Cross Fell 893m. Return path to High Cap, Ardale & Townhead to Row. A fine bright frosty day with a freezing northerly wind. Fine views all around. | Vin | 25/11/2021 |
Revist, On way to Cross Fell with Richard and Denise, ticking a couple of Tumps and Elmsie on the way. Still needs a revist to complete Elmsie. | cjo | 14/11/2021 |

from Hartside Pass & Fiends Fell | IWC | 26/09/2020 |
From end of lane to west. Mist above 1500'. Got to large cairn with shelter, surprised I'd reached the summit already but assumed such a grand construction must be it. Took a bearing down the south ridge and after 300m realized there was higher ground on my left. Checked the map and realized my 'summit' was only Knapside Hill (presumably). Found the right cairn easily enough after that and walked on a bearing to hit the south end of Melmerby High Scar. Then descended SW until Cuns Fell came into view. | Wycombe Wanderer | 08/09/2020 |
from A686 via Maiden Way. Wild, wet & windy. | IanHHill | 04/08/2020 |
11.2 mile circular from Gamblesby, walked along road to Melmerby then along dead end road SE picking up path through woods up to Meikle Awfell, from there an annoying descent followed by trails fording 2 little streams along the access land boundary until the col between Cuns Fell and Caterpallot Hill, climbed over wonky gate into private land up to the summit of Caterpallot Hill, returned back to col and then a long ascent up to Cuns Fell's rocky summit, then followed ATV tracks onto Melmerby Fell, from summit an easy, not particularly boggy trail takes you all the way to Fiend's Fell, from the trig we descended NW across easy ground joining the byway and following it easily back to Gamblesby. The day started cloudy and showery but all cloud cleared when we got onto the higher tops, only saw 3 offroad bikers on the byway at the end, no one else, nice views into the Lakes, Scotland and towards The Cheviot. | DanTrig | 02/08/2020 |
From Hartside Cross. Up via the tramway, which starts well, with a grand stile and two bridges, but gets fainter and boggier until it peters out. Then straight up to the top. Back via the ridge, Knapside Hill and Fiend's Fell, which is boggy only at the cols. | Peter_W_Mitchell | 17/07/2020 |
Started in passing place just up from the wood at start of the Maiden Way, follow Maiden Way to as near as possible to Melmerby Fell summit, then onto Fiends Fell, down to Hartside Cafe area then down ld road (bit of main road) back to the car. First hill since lockdown. | JulieB | 22/06/2020 |

An early evening walk from the former Hartside café, over Fiend's Fell, Little Knapside Hill and Knapside Hill, whose shelter cairn had been a sighting mark from the start, to the little row of candidate summit cairns North of the main cairn on Melmerby Fell. The setting sun was my companion on the walk back. | Nick Down1 | 28/03/2019 |
Rake Beck Wood (Melmerby) > Cuns Fell > Melmerby Fell > Knapside Hill> Gate Castle > Rake Beck Wood (Melmerby)
Parked at the end of the road (space for several cars), followed track up to the intake and then cut across open ground, staying above the fence till Cuns Fell was reached. Climbed up onto the plateau and traversed Melmerby Fell and Knapside Hill before descending the track back to the car. Stunning February day. Unseasonably warm but quite hazy, just me and H. | johnkaysleftleg | 27/02/2019 |

Short round of 3 hills from NY 6241 3699, parking for a few cars at lane end. Good track through Rake Beck Wood to NY 6385 3767 after which a direct line was taken to the top over ever steepening ground and a good scramble up the High Scar. On to Cuns Fell and Catterpallot Hill. Cloud down, wet and windy. | jonglew | 21/09/2018 |
From Hartside | Slash3 | 23/06/2018 |
From end of road at Rake Beck Wood taking track to sheep pens then on to Melmerby Fell. Unfortunately mist all the way so GPS helped until I met the wall/fence junction on way to Cuns Fell. Came off that to west and picked up unmarked path back to about half a mile up from starting point. | SS | 17/02/2018 |
