Parked at 568m spot. Followed gravel track to 100m before shooting hut then turned left to follow the ATV track for grouse butts almost to the summit, avoiding all the mud. | webmaster | 18/03/2024 |
Tough going from Nenthead in thick snow via The Dodd and Coalcleugh. Blue skies. Nice frozen tarn on top. Some slog through the peat groughs in the snow heading west back to Nenthead. | cumbria mammoth | 03/03/2024 |
Track up to near the top. | robertphillips | 10/09/2023 |
Flying visit from Australia. From Killhope mine centre up the footpath to the ridge, Killhope Law, Stangend and Middlehope Moor. Fine views from summit, the pole seems to be back. | dchill01 | 06/08/2023 |
With Colin. | Chris Ellis | 06/06/2023 |
Everyone else has said this is a bill that fights you all the way with its trackless heather. They’re right. It’s done. Never coming back. | Donpeblo | 29/05/2023 |
Appropriate hill name. From 609 to west. I was expecting the usual heather and sponge but it was far worse than that, with some of the worst peat hags I've encountered and I started to wonder if I did something really bad in a past life. I recommend any other route, unless there's something you desperately need to atone for. | Wycombe Wanderer | 28/08/2022 |
From Nenthead to Allenheads road. Layby between Shivery hill and 569 metres on OS map. Took track towards shooting hut, then slogged up through heather. On the way back took the plastic road that we hadn't found on the way up, which was much easier. Weather cleared . Broken poll and huge cairn on summit. | Lazylizzie | 24/08/2022 |
Variation on Nuttall walk 10.2 from CP at highpoint on A689. | Longwojo | 16/07/2022 |
Definitely picked the wrong day to do this - the weather was ok when we left Allenheads but by the time we were half up the Carriers Way to Killhope Law I realised I was soaked even though it barely seemed to be raining At the top it was quite windy and viability was awful so no panoramic views. Only stayed long enough to photograph the damaged trig, the cairn and the now broken pole. I'd always intended to come back down via the plastic road but visibility was so bad I couldn't see it. Eventually I found it after following the white poles of the grouse feeding stations | deadheaduk | 15/07/2022 |
From Swinhope Head first to Chapelfell top following the wall virtually all the way, easy going in this dry spell. Then back across road for similar walk to Westhope Hill. Drove round to above Coalcleugh for another easy walk to Killhope Law. | dickscroop | 10/07/2022 |
CHAOS Club meet, Tony, Brian Steve and Alan R, quite a tough amble across the peat groughs from Killhope Cross, back via Black Hill. | Lou | 01/05/2022 |
This was a tough climb for me as the heat had started to get to me! I had climbed up from the road near Coalcleugh as per the Nuttals route. Far reaching views from the summit. | morgs4mountains | 25/03/2022 |
from 609 - not recommended | jef | 19/01/2022 |
With Sue and NB from Killhope Mine. Follow fp N to border then th Killhope Law. Follow fain track to shooting cabin and good track to small cairn and return to border line and follow SW to Stangend Rigg. S to stone shelter and path to Lanehead. Return by Weardale Way to start. Cold light wind and sunny. | Frank | 18/01/2022 |
From 568 spot height to N. Followed the track then through the pathless heather to the top. A good AV track follows the line of grouse butts and would make for an easier ascent. | JohnR | 13/09/2021 |
The second hill on a 93km walk from Gateshead to Alston. | Christo1979 | 05/09/2021 |
From pt 568 on the Nenthead to Allenheads road. Gravel track to shooting hut, but missed the ATV track cutting back left about 100 m before the hut. Ruff’n’tuff above the hut. From the trig point a thin path follows a bearing of 314 degrees before petering out – continuing on the bearing intersects the plastic netting lined ATV track – (blessed relief from the veg) – back to the hut. High P – nice weather? – pah! Cold wind, low cloud and mizzle, drizzle, rain, all day - it’s a Bank Holiday! | Isbjorn | 29/08/2021 |
A 22 kilometre hike from Killhope Cross via Nag's Head, Dead Stones, the south end of Perry's Dam, Flinty Fell, Nenthead, Dykeheads, The Dodd, Coalcleugh, Shivery Hill, Killhope Law and the county boundary back to Killhope Cross. | Clach Liath | 16/04/2021 |
Large cairn on top alongside trig point further along.
Stopped at nearby shooting hut for lunch | 2510chris | 25/03/2021 |
From Killhope Law retrace your steps to the fence line and back to the start. Also took in The Dodd. | smocks and denims | 17/12/2020 |
From 568 spot height. Mine track then well maintained shooting butt track nearly all the way to top of Killhope. Carried on to Stangend Rigg and Middlehope Moor. Surprisingly good underfoot. Short heather and bog free. Swirling mist in the valley and mostly sunny. With B and R. | jenx | 09/11/2020 |

Probably my favourite top of the day, nice little body of water, great views and a few features on the summit. Jake found another frog, but was disappointed that I wouldn't let him take a live shotgun cartridge home. | simocity | 31/08/2020 |
3rd Nuttall of the day with my Dad. | Jake Simpson | 31/08/2020 |
From Coalclough. Is road to Shivery Hill and shooting track | Jim T | 29/08/2020 |
From Coalcleugh cattle grid following Nuttalls' route to the SW of Bridge Cleugh. Most of the 10m pole now lies on the ground, leaving a stump less than 2m high. | Peter_W_Mitchell | 07/08/2020 |
Cowshill to Middlehope Moor via High Greenfield. Along county boundary to Stangend Rigg to Killhope Law. Continue along county boundary Black Hill Quarries to The Dodd. Return to public footpath (Isaac’s Tea Trail) and descent to Dykeheads and Nenthead. Out to Nenthead Lead Mine and ascent via public footpath to Flinty Fell. Descent to track and follow track to Perry Dam. Ascent to Nag’s Head and on to Dead Stones. Return to Cowshill via Lamb’s Head, Highwatch Currick and Cleugh Head. | raymooremanx | 11/07/2020 |
Followed track towards old mine, then ATV track (plastic surface) up past shooting butts. Short distance of rough ground at the top. Visited summit, trig and cairn. The 30ft pole is now much shorter. | PGCE | 16/05/2020 |
As jonglew. Followed shooting butts downhill. Good plastic track covers the bog. | Campbell Singer | 04/01/2020 |
Roadside parking at NY 8148 4587. Track to disued mine then a line up the hillside. Took a direct line back to car. | jonglew | 17/07/2019 |

With Colin, from the summit of the Allenheads Rd, up the track to the quarry and acroos the heather to the top. Came down via the shooting butts track - much easier. | Andrew Pearson | 08/03/2019 |
ran up and down it 3 times... 15 miles | willow | 28/12/2018 |
Middle one of 3 on N side of Weardale, dryish above, but wet underfoot. | IanHHill | 04/11/2018 |
Ascended from the north in cloudy conditions. Started with the track to the shooter's hut and then followed streams for much of the way to avoid tussocks. The aerial by the trig point is now flat on the ground. Best feature of the hill was the large cairn to the south east of the summit. | JohnW | 20/10/2018 |
Ran up and down twice. (will add garmin details later) | willow | 13/07/2018 |
Started from Killhope Cross. Followed the old border fence between Durham and Cumbria until reaching the cairn which marks the tricounty border of Durham, Cumbria, and Northumberland. Then more or less followed the border between Northumberland and Durham to the summit. Lots of peat hags bigger than 6ft in height and lots of very marshy/muddy pools to navigate. Do NOT do this route in the wet. After summit, dropped down the other side via the Carrier's Way to Killhope lead mining museum and then followed road back to the car at Killhope Cross. You might save on ascension on this route but it is one of the most difficult ways of bagging this hill. | NorthernWayfarer | 17/06/2018 |
Parked at the high point of the Coalcleugh-Allenheads road, opposite teh track that heads towards Killhope Law. This leads to a shooting hut, from where we took to the open slopes to the summit. On the way down the kids enjoyed playing on the large snowbank above the hut. With JT and HT. | Sprog | 21/04/2018 |
From road to the north via track to shooting hut. Soft snow but sunny and excellent views. | Winterfloodian | 08/01/2018 |
Minus 5C blue skies light covering of snow. Climbed via Stangend from Killhope visitor centre. Interesting large cairn, unfortunately the large pole has snapped off leaving 1 m stump. | John Lee | 08/12/2017 |
From high point on road - rubbish weather but bagged something! | SS | 28/10/2017 |
The summit of Killhope Law was visible from the road, but the path on the map appeared not to exist. I walked eastwards to the summit of the road and found a shooting track leading south to a green shooting hut amidst spoil heaps. Having climbed up the side of a spoil heap I continued upwards but found no path until I reached the summit ridge, straddling Northumberland and Durham. After weeks of rain the summit plateau was a quagmire, with the trig point surrounded by little pools. The 30-foot pole which once marked the true summit lay on the ground. To the west lay Cross Fell, whose summit was clear, but Great Dun Fell and Little Dun Fell were in cloud. Surprisingly, I heard a gunshot. On the descent I discovered a plastic-lined shooting track which was virtually underwater but easier than tramping through bog. | peter4lc | 12/10/2017 |
From Killhope Cross | Slash3 | 30/09/2017 |
Easy approach up the Carriers Way from East Allen Dale. Lovely sunny day and fine views. | milimana | 08/07/2017 |
Walked from Allenheads with Hannah and Corinne. Misty and windy but at least it wasn't raining. The sun came out on the way back down. My last English Nuttall,(except for Pillar Rock) so this walk was good fun in spite of the mist and wind. | flockwatcher | 10/06/2017 |
Parked at Lanehead and ran up to mining museum before taking the footpath opposite and climbing to the summit. Loved the views of the Western hills and the eastern view towards the coast | madaddo | 04/06/2017 |
From minor road to the north. | Alan Caine | 03/06/2017 |
More or less direct approach from mining centre.
Most of the pole is now horizontal. | ger | 24/05/2017 |
Nuttall Walk EN 10.2 Killhope Law from Cowshill, visiting The Dodd, Killhope Law and Middlehope Moor. 21km with 670m ascent in 7 hours. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 04/02/2017 |
Start point start of Carriers Way near Dirt Pot/Allenheads.
Followed Carriers Way to shooting hut then push to the summit. Lots of Grouse butts and there may be problems during grouse shooting season because you leave the right of way to make the summit. | NorthernWayfarer | 07/08/2016 |
WALK BASED ON NUTTALL' WALK 10.2 BUT LAZILY DROVE TO NEAREST POINT ON ROAD TO THE DODD, KILLHOPE LAW AND MIDDLEHOPE MOOR AND WENT UP AND BACK EACH. A PLEASANT DRIVE BUT WALKS SOMEWHAT NONDESCRIPT. | BURGESS | 27/09/2015 |
2nd peak on wet and misty day based on Nuttalls route climbe SE on W side of Bridge Cleugh follwing Quad bike tracks to top of ridge. With G. Parked on A689 near bridge over Killhope Burn then up to Black Hill > The Dodd > Killhope Law via Coalcleugh then back to A689 at mining museum on path & back up road. | RT1970 | 18/04/2015 |
From Bridge Clough, no sign of a path. | mick | 24/11/2014 |
hated this hill by the time i was off it. must have not been paying attention and missed the mesh the other folks talk of. had an 'interesting' wander through what seemed like miles of peat hags some over 3m deep. relieved to get to summit area. whats with the pole? - descended to the road and walked back to head of pass on tarmac. unlikely to come back without a helicopter. | stig_nest | 20/09/2014 |

From East Allen Dale, with plenty of parking by the bridge, up the Carriers' Way (Track). This was very easy underfoot, metaled as far as Round Hill and then grassy to the Shooting Cabin a few hundred metres from the summit. | TeasyChris | 10/05/2013 |

4th of 7 'tops' on anticlockwise round of Weardale head from Cowshill. Fairly easy from E thnx to tracks of grouse-feeder's 4x4 but route to Killhope Cross via "3 Shires Head" certainly hard going. Lunched @ the best summit north of the A689 at 12.15pm. | signyred | 25/08/2011 |
