From Cowpe to the Trig Pillar at Top of Leach, from there to the Boundary and then to Hail Storm Hill | Wayne Mac | 17/10/2019 |
From the new houses at Boarsgreave.Through the scrap yard and up on to the PBW. Mtb tracks through quarry area then over moor to high point. Returned via trig 474m with viewpoint indicator. | NormanW | 10/10/2019 |
Hail Storm Hill hardly an appropriate name today as the whole country baked under a quite extreme late August heatwave. | Alex C | 24/08/2019 |
Parked at free car park off Cowpe Road (SD83405 21409) which isn't obvious to find after braving the rush hour traffic on the M60. Then set off in full waterproofs in the rain up to Cowpe and Boarsgrove. Had to drag the dog along as it was wet and windy!! Past the abandoned vehicles to the reservoir then up to the MB quarry. Borough HP not obvious in the mist (used GPS) then along to the summit cairn and across to Cowpe Lowe. Cloud lifted and gave great views of South Pennines. Took off waterproofs and ran down to car with a wet and tired dog! 9.2km 339m ascent. | John Eley | 09/08/2019 |
With Val. Weather very hot Parked just past the new housing at Boarsgreave and walked to place where there are many derelict vehicles then sharp left up path to bridleway and onto the TP first. Past the old quarry workings and on to find the small cairn that marks the true summit. Went to the county top after then descended by outward route | mike.hoult | 22/07/2019 |
10km trail run from Cowpe - saw some interesting mountain bike trails on an old quarry and a fire! | ByronHaywood | 23/04/2019 |
Came up from Cowpe, and walked along the ridge first to visit the trig point before coming over the moor to this point. Well, its nothing to write home about that's for sure! | Father Ted | 12/04/2019 |
bagged while out trig hunting | SeanTither | 27/03/2019 |
Evening run from Boarsgreave. Parked above new small housing estate. Track up to what’s best described as the house were londrovers and things go to die... sharp left track to pick up bridalway then the old quarry rail trackbed. Shortly after Quarry info sign struck up on Quarry path then open moorland to small cairn. Irony...slight hail on way up.. | N.Morters | 16/01/2019 |
went to trig point first. boggy and misty on top. | gettingonabit | 06/01/2019 |
From ESE across moor from boundary top. Marshy in places but partly frozen, but not especially rough.
2ft high cairn easily visible from about 700m away. | Nick Caunt | 13/12/2018 |
From Cowpe (parking easy br new houses) up and back. Easier on way back as I cut straight to quarry area and its myriad of tracks. 100 years since Armistice Day - Lest We Forget. | SS | 11/11/2018 |
From near new houses in Cowpe, past all the old Land Rovers onto hill, following paths up to wind farm to the county top boundary and then on across moor with no path. Wet and flat, but HP easy to locate. Path off towards quarry to north towards Cowpe Lowe. | PeterD | 06/10/2018 |
Circular walk from Cowpe. Dry underfoot, excellent views. | Winterfloodian | 05/05/2018 |
Parked near pub on A680 (approx SD831159) then cut over to the right of way then followed foot tracks to approx SD835169 then used wind farm tracks to get me close to summit then wandered through bog to summit. Found small cairn using grid ref on hill-bagging. Cheers. | assynt_bob | 03/05/2018 |
One of three from the parking area in Cowpe - sign says this will be closed from 5th May. Up to Cowpe Low mostly along the bridleway then a slightly boggy walk from the old quarry to Hail Storm Hill and the county top. | the_adam | 21/04/2018 |
From the County top over thankfully frozen tussocky bog to reach a neat square cairn at the HP, slightly N of the OS Spot height of 477m. Cold easterly wind, bright sun, blue skies and hazy views. Onto Cowpe Lowe. Parked near houses in Cowpe. | Denise | 24/02/2018 |
4th and final hill of the day ( i didn't know about the boundary log!) on a route from Hapton station to Whitworth to complete Topo section R01- The South Pennines from Liverpool to Nottingham, climbing Great Hameldon, Cribden Hill and Cowpe Lowe, descending SE to drop onto a track merging with the Rossendale way, passing some Belted Galloway cattle, taking pics and a vid before being forced off to detour by an intolerant cow who followed me for another 300 metres. I continued direct for the summit, finding the small pile of stones recording 478m @ SD 83500 19349. I continued on and my nearest point to theoretical 477m spot height was at SD83475 19289 recording 476m (according to OS maps spot height is at SD83483 19288 so approx 80m further South than summit) Amazingly vast flat tundra-like plateaux. I headed NE paralleling some quarry workings on a path dropping back onto the Rossendale Way that merged with the Pennine Bridleway, veering off this to take a fp all the way to Whitworth. | Dazingdale | 10/12/2017 |
From Borgreaves, small layby opposite new houses. HSH boundary first then on to the Cowpe Lowe trig pillar. | jonglew | 10/11/2017 |
From the N. Parked by new build houses at Boarsgreave. Clockwise round taking in the CoH and Tump of Cowpe Lowe. Met TJ. | Minto | 05/11/2017 |
2/5M from cowpe road end parked near old mill cottages. | robertphillips | 03/11/2017 |
Solo | Longwojo | 29/10/2017 |
Parked at the top end of Cowpe village and walked a clockwise (unwise) circuit of trig, county top and Marilyn. Through a tractor graveyard lower down then onto the open moor. The traipse direct from the county top is bloody horrendous. Best saved until after your dead. Summit yielded no views..just squelching misery. Never again! | stig_nest | 05/09/2017 |
From Cowpe picnic area. Solo. Cowpe Lowe, Hail Storm Hill & Hail Storm Hill boundary. Approached through Crag Quarry. | ADT | 24/08/2017 |
Cowpe Lowe and Hail Storm Hill from Cowpe. | rhalstead | 20/08/2017 |
As Mart. Parked in free cp just off Cowpe rd SD834214. Climbed Cowpe Lowe. Climbed up to the edge of Craggs quarry. Located top easily. Walked off west to boundary. Wet underfoot but not impassable. | Moorponder | 03/07/2017 |
with Cowpe Lowe from Cowpe doubt I would have found it without GPS | Neilb | 07/05/2017 |
Alan | Glenford | 24/12/2016 |
Tramped across the bog from the boundary. OK today as no rain for a week. Wouldn't try it in 'normal' conditions for the area. | berksbantam | 25/10/2016 |
Parking available in Cowpe Village. If you are doing this one after the boundary hill then a direct line across the moor is probably a no-goer. The summit ridge is entirely red fescue grass, indicative of wet bogs. Better to head SW to the first turbine then head off to the summit as the sloping ground is noticeably drier than the top! This is spoken from experience! | moorsman | 20/10/2016 |
On a moorland walk from Walsden to Waterfoot. | alistairpooler | 15/10/2016 |
A bit of a quagmire on the top, but the walk can be made really good by walking from Rawtenstall, over Cowpe Low, Hailstorm Hill and Top of Leach to Whitworth. Clear weather is a good idea to ensure that your wanderings all over Hailstorm Hill actually include the top. I stayed overnight at the Red Lion (good food and beer), then bagged Freeholds Top on day 2, on the way to Hebden Bridge, via Walsden, Rochdale canal, Warland, and Stoodley Pike. Good rail and bus links from Buxton via Manchester make this a great linear walk. | Gill | 11/09/2016 |
Up from Cowpe Road on(for me)difficult to follow paths and then simply went uphill, eventually reaching Rossendale Way.Good path to top of Cowpe Lowe, then back down to wander through Cragg Quarry and find quite easily top of Hail Storm Hill.Crossed boggy moor to Hail Storm Hill(boundary).Warm overcast day. With Oscar. | catman | 06/09/2016 |
With Catman. | oscarrosie | 06/09/2016 |

Parking to the East on the road to the reservoir then along the PROW (through someone's garden and across their patio on the footpath:) ) up to Cowpe Lowe then over Hail Storm Hill & Boundary summits to Hail Storm Ridge Pillar. Both Pillars in Good condition. some great views this evening. | griefmiester | 05/05/2016 |
With K. In mist and rain. Quarry interesting and lovely well/spring at rear of derelict farm just off edge brought home the humanity of days gone by. | Ashley | 01/05/2016 |
From end of road at Cowpe. The path up from the reservoir is better than the one slightly to the north. | squeegs | 21/04/2016 |
Nice to do this on a lovely spring day after trying and failing to get to the summit in heavy clag 3 years ago. Went from Rake this time rather than Cowpe to avoid what I remember as extremely wet bit by res. Did boundary first then pathless 0.6 mile bog trot to top. | Mark Sims | 17/03/2016 |
out via Rochdale; back via Rawtenstall | IanHHill | 14/03/2016 |
Parked in free cp just off Cowpe rd SD834214 now with a little café. Climbed Cowpe Lowe then descended to Rossendale way. Went along Foe Edge passed Waughs Well and climbed up to the edge of Craggs quarry. Searched around for the small pile of stones, finding them after 15 minutes of walking about. Still it was a lovely day and the skylarks kept serenading me! | mart0797 | 13/03/2016 |
Climbed this in a Hail Storm today! With Eire, Evan, Sail, Danu, Coel & Alfie. | Dangerous Dave | 30/01/2016 |

With Jo, from Cowpe: Rooley Moor Road to Hailstorm Ridge Trig, then Hail Storm Hill (boundary), track to Knowl Moor Trig, then returning to Hail Storm Hill, through Cragg Quarry onto Cowpe Lowe, returning along Rossendale Way and beside Cowpe Reservoir. Weather; sunny, warm, good visibility. | amblerbob | 11/06/2015 |
From Cowpe. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/freeholds-top-and-hail-storm-hill.html | Gayle | 08/12/2014 |
From Cowpe. You need a GPS to figure out where all the paths are going. There are mountain bike trails through the quarry which are useful if, as today, there were no bikers. | clivevilla | 02/12/2014 |
