From cattle grid south of West Witton via trig point at Penhill Scar and path along top of the escarpment. Out on path through fields, back along track via Little Penhill. | Winterfloodian | 21/11/2023 |
Parked in Carlton, Harland Hill first then back to col and up along fence line to top. Came back by heading NW to pickup track back to Carlton. | PeterD | 10/08/2023 |
Circular from West Witton | PreCambrianLife | 07/08/2023 |
From West Burton. With B and R | jenx | 16/01/2023 |
Parked opposite the farm entrance at the end of the bridleway at SE0189 8544. Followed the bridleway to the col, then along a path W of the wall and fence to the summit. Returned towards Harland Hill. With P and R. | LizH | 15/12/2022 |
Parked near Cote Bridge and walked up to the col between H of H and Harland Hill. Then followed the wall/fence to the uninspiring summit.
Interesting smelt mill remains at the start of the bridleway. | Hugh Taylor | 04/11/2022 |
From the end of the path between Height of Hazely and Harland Hill. I kept to a lower path then crossed the beck and went straight for the top of Height of Hazely to try to save a bit of time but the route up to the col, though a little longer is probably just as quick. Then across on the fence line to Harland Hill and back down. I had to pick my wife up so rushed and it took 1h 50m but included a little running on the way down. | clivevilla | 10/04/2022 |
From parking at 0187 8534. Up the path to the col then along beside fence to high point. Then on to Harland Hill. | NormanW | 05/09/2021 |
En route to meet friends in Swaledale. From Carlton this time- duplicate ascent! low cloud and drizzle. Tussocky boggy track to indistinct HP in moss and grass | Denise | 21/05/2021 |
Alongside the wall from Hartland Hill. Levelish summit, uninspiring in rain and cloud. | RichardM | 21/05/2021 |
7.2 mile circular from road east of Penhill following footpath across fields steeply up to Penhill Beacon then along edge to trig. Afterwards the boggy trail follows the wall along the edge and up to Height of Hazely summit. Then trail follows the wall down to col and up to Harland Hill. We retraced our steps to col and descended track to Howden Lodge then easy tracks/paths heading back towards road east of Penhill. Nice views towards Dales and North Yorkshire Moors. Sunny/breezy with showers but we seemed to miss them all. We saw 3 people on whole walk. | DanTrig | 19/05/2021 |
After Harland Hill - more vague quad bike tracks and dry stone walls with no stiles. From the top headed NW and down the footpath near West Burton. Very happy to stop off at the waterfall just outside the village - today was the hottest day of the year. | Wheelsy | 31/07/2020 |
Up from West Burton keeping next to the beck but running into stinging nettles. On to Harland Hill. | Eddie | 20/07/2020 |
From West Scrafton via Penhill | briandiggle | 06/07/2020 |
Parked in the village of Carlton and headed up the ROW heading west and ending up in the middle of Height of Hazely and Harland hill visiting both summits from this point before returning the same way. Six and a half miles in Two and a half hours. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 06/07/2020 |
Harland Hill and Height of Hazely in a circular walk from Carlton. 12km with 400m ascent in 4 hours. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 16/03/2020 |
With Wendy A one way traverse from East up over Penn Hill to trig and on along the curving wall a further kilometre and a bit to the nondescript summit | vegibagger | 01/01/2020 |
From Cote, verge parking (SE 0187 8534). Good RoW up to the col at SE 0347 8501, then a sometime boggy track to the hill top. Nipped up to Harland Hill on the return. | jonglew | 11/12/2019 |
Good track from east to plateau, then rough heather. | PGCE | 22/07/2019 |
Walked up through fields and woods from West Burton. Path unclear in places. I'd recommend using the By-way on the north side or the Bridleway on the south. Good views. | IanHHill | 06/04/2019 |
From Carlton, to look for buried block then onto Heights of Hazely and trig pillar. | cjo | 09/03/2019 |
Pen Hill with Ben | jabailey314 | 15/08/2018 |
With my wife and brother - quick morning ascent from West Burton via Cote Farm to this and Harland Hill. Easy walk, no bog, this summit was fairly flat and featureless - high point could be anywhere. Views were good on the ascent, less so on the summit. | wheresthepath | 14/08/2018 |
An easy solo walk from Harland Hill in increasingly wet weather. 2 hours 10 minutes for both hills. | bolton | 24/04/2018 |
Harland Hill > Height of Hazely from GR: SE 01864 85551 | ronaldo333 | 07/01/2018 |
From West Witton and Penhill | paulcook2809 | 04/11/2017 |
I went up from the RoW to the north that ends below Black Scar. I climbed the wall by a hurdle (complete with barbed wire) to the west of Black Scar. Featureless summit. I went down to the bridleway to the south. My last English Hump > 500m. | Alan Moore | 27/10/2017 |
With K. Confusing paths and no obvious route to the summit. An unmapped path following the wall at the north shoulder of the hill is an adequate route leading close to the summit. | Ashley | 16/07/2017 |
Easy parking From high point of road to the east. Flat summit area and many a bump on both sides of the fence were visited. | Alan Caine | 20/05/2017 |
From West Burton with Jeffrey via Morpeth Wood, Knights Templars monument, Langthwaite Lane, Penhill Quarry and Black Scar; before wading through snow drifts and hugging the wall round to the west and then following wall to summit. Near whiteout and serious wind-chill. Not entirely sure we should have been there. | rfoster | 12/02/2017 |
With Jo, from Carlton: b/w to boundary wall, then onto Harland Hill and then Height of Hazely, returning via Penhill trig and Penhill Beacon, and then across Melmerby Moor. Weather; generally sunny with cool breeze, good visibility. | amblerbob | 30/07/2016 |
Parked on grass verge about 200m beyond Cote Farm (Space for 2 or 3 cars) - Up bridleway for just over ¾km & then excellent ATV track to plateau & then short walk to summit of Harland Hill - From Harland hill followed west side of wall/fence to unmarked summit - Bridleway back to Cote Farm. (S) | gerrybowes | 05/07/2016 |
From West Burton to Cote Farm then up track to broken wall. From there over to gate and short path in heather to Harland Hill. Then followed fairly damp path (not surprised given recent rain) to Height of Hazeley before returning to col and down ROW to farm and then West Burton. | SS | 23/01/2016 |
With Eire, Evan, Sail, Danu, Coel & Alfie. We also visited the trig point before descending to Carlton. | Dangerous Dave | 30/10/2015 |

Started West Burton. Went past waterfall and followed field path to Cote Bridge. Good track all way to close to summit of Harland Hill. Followed wall on a broad ridge to Height of Hazely. Then back to West Burton. | MikeM | 06/02/2015 |
Continuation of walk from Harland Hill. Followed ATV track north-east to bridleway, then continued NNE by wall/fence to unmarked summit about 20m south-west of fence junction. To return, retraced outward rout (mostly) to bridleway, which we followed down into Waldendale. With AT. | Man of Kernow1 | 28/09/2014 |
Parked at Cote Farm. Up on tracks into mist. Used GPS to find N/S wall and followed this to the broad flat top of the moor. No cairn. | arranc | 10/07/2013 |

from harland hill - beacon woulod be a much better top than the real summit | gigglejon | 29/10/2009 |
Ran up to this peak past the Pen Hill beacon. Shame the beacon is not at the summit because the summit itself is fairly unassuming. Great views of mid Wensleydale. | funkyferret | 19/08/2007 |

From Carlton in Coverdale. | ChrisR | 23/06/1996 |
Parked to the E and walked via Pen Hill. Very flat summit, highest point a matter of opinion. | Aye Jimmy | 06/09/1992 |
A foot of fresh snow on the Pennines so I drove over to West Witton from Hull for a winter walk up Pen Hill, striking in so many views. It did not disappoint; snow flurries and spindrift were hard to separate- lots of sunshine, too, so good views. Care needed on ice by the beacon, due to the strong wind. I kept to the escarpment most of the way to the line of the bw down to Cote in Waldendale. My log book has the height of the highest point- probably just visited to keep a good sense of direction on the last km of the moorland which had fewer features as it turned S. | pwheeler | 28/01/1990 |
