From Midshires Way | Longwojo | 11/02/2022 |
Our second attempt. First attempt visibility was 0 due to fog so we decided not to bother. This time we made it from the layby to Combs Head. Wind and rain rough so turned back, next time we will complete to Black Edge and back. | Kniverbee | 02/01/2022 |
Sunny, warm but very windy day. From Buxton over Corbar Hill, Black Edge, Combs Head and Corbar Hill again. Followed up with walk up to Grin Low. | mavero10 | 31/12/2021 |
From old road. Coombs Head and Black Edge. Direct across moor to ruined shelter, then to trig and third possible top. Back by wall and more direct to start point. With B, B and R. | jenx | 19/11/2021 |
Parked on old Roman road to SW of Coombe Head. With Jenx and dugs up grassy slopes and over wall to gain summit. Thence direct across the moors on reasonable going plus vehicle and animal tracks to wall by old building, possible high point of Black Edge. Out to trig and spot beyond to make sure of summit. Back down trail leading SW of top and round to near start point. Wall hop then direct down to car. | nordicstar | 19/11/2021 |
Parked on A5004 in layby at SK042747. Walked along Midshires Way almost 1 mile to stile to Access Land then up track to gate at SK039758. Followed path by wall to Combs Head then all the way to the trig on Black Edge. Returned the same way an went over the first stile onto path which goes through Light Wood to Buxton. Returned to car along A5004 | climbingkershaw | 07/07/2021 |
Ascended from the Buxton Road | JK | 30/06/2021 |
Parked on Roman Rd (SK 0411 7523) as far up as was reasonably navigable, prob could have driven further but road gets very bad after. Took the 'road' for ~320m before hopping the fence, and then a wall a bit higher up. On to Black Edge. | jonglew | 22/06/2021 |
With H. | Chris Ellis | 15/06/2021 |
Ethel bagging walk starting at Errwood Reservoir | HanPen71 | 12/06/2021 |
3/4 Dewey day. Parked in the lay by on the A5004 at SK 042 747. Walked up the Midshires Way to the Access Land, then aimed for gate in wall at approx SK 039 758, there picked up the clear path which follows the wall all the way to Black Edge Trig, deviating off it to bag the summit of Combs Head en route. Returned back along the wall to gate at top corner of field at SK 048 750, where headed S by wall to Trig at Corbar Hill and down RoW through Corbar Woods to A5004, which was followed uphill back to the car. 12km with 330m ascent in 2h50m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 15/04/2021 |
There is no direct way from Longhill Farm despite it being shown as Access Land on my map. Best to access it from the Midshires Way using the gate near SK 03918 75931 or from the White Hall Centre by taking the RoW to the NE to near SK 03478 76516 and going up on the east side of the big wall. | Alan Moore | 02/04/2021 |
Parked to W on A5004. Combs Head and Black Edge. | PGCE | 25/12/2020 |
10:30, 8 degrees, sunny spells, south-westerlies,cloudy later. From
White Hall Centre with Bag For Life. | Wycombe Wanderer | 22/10/2020 |
Parked at the official end of the minor road from the A5004 which is also the Midshire's way, it is possible to drive further along this track but you will need a 4x4. Walked up Mid shire's way to access land on my right leading up to North West off Combes head, summit is just of path in heather then continued to follow path for well over an hour to reach the trig on Black Edge. Navigation is simple as the path sticks to the wall all the way only cutting into the moor when a stream is crossed. Seven and half miles in two hours forty minutes. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 22/02/2020 |
Nice run over from Black Edge along wall on W of Coomb Moss avoiding the bogs | davechaffey | 13/11/2019 |

N | Nick Caunt | 29/08/2019 |
From lay-by on A 5004, via the Midshires Way north and a permissive path onto the plateau. Narrow path SE along the edge brought me close to the summit. Also visited the northern 500m ring contour before returning by the outward route. Solo. | Man of Kernow1 | 20/08/2019 |
From Black Edge and then across Combs Moss; not something I'll recommend, boggy and very slow progress especially on a windy and wet day; energy sapping. Combs Head is a good end point though, and later dropped onto Midshires Way and back to Buxton for the return train, thoroughly soaked. | JOHNS | 11/08/2019 |
summer solstice walk, to watch the sunset | AvidSockWearer | 21/06/2019 |
8 mile circular of Combs Moss from Buxton following the path around the edges re-bagging Black Edge (previously bagged in 2011)and Combs Head (previously bagged in 2016), fairly warm with high cloud cover all day nice views. Afterwards drove to and bagged Chelmorton Low and Sough Top trig. | DanTrig | 08/04/2018 |
Solo. Walked up the A5004 from Buxton. Along Roman Road. Over fence to stone wall then summit just behind gritstone crag. Walked in mist and ground snow across Combs Moss to Black Edge. | Dangerous Dave | 08/02/2018 |
Parked on A5004 WNW of Combs Head. Found a path up to the ridge and then right to summit of Combs Head. Decided to go across Combs Moss to Black Edge rather than driving round and doing a shorter walk from the other side. This was mostly pathless and, although the going was not too bad, it did go on a bit. Iy was a lovely cold, sunny November day though. | clivevilla | 08/11/2017 |
Circuit of Combs Moss plateau, from Gout Lane car park. Four legged baggers are unfortunately not allowed on the plateau due to ground nesting birds. | BobHancock | 05/11/2017 |

Indistinct point in thick boggy heather near edge. Steep ascent on rough grass from road. Low grey cloud and cool breeze. From Whitehall Centre ( RHS meet) . | Denise | 04/11/2017 |
From S - tight parking opposite galvanised gates at road end. | jimbloomer | 06/10/2017 |
KJF Completing our half circuit of Combs Moss along the wall edge path. Nothing specifically marks the heathery summit, apart from lots of larks and small gnat/midge clouds which will seek you out if you pause a while to enjoy the views. | crazy | 02/09/2017 |
Parked at 043747 on the verge at the end of the Roman road. Took the public right of way from 036759 up to the summit. Wandered around the heather to find what I think is the highest point. Solo. Headed to BlackEdge. | bolton | 04/08/2017 |
Parked at lay by outside the White Hall Centre then across field, along Roman Road and then up to the plateau. Saw Curlew establishing their territories and loads of Red Grouse then along to Black Edge. | John Eley | 26/03/2017 |
Drove up the lane from the south to limit. No easy parking so asked if I could leave the car in house car parking space. Got lady owner out of bed for which I apologised profusely. She was great about it and allowed me to use a space. Then I encountered the gamekeeper who happily gave me the route up through a marked gate and track up to another gate onto grouse moor. Friendly helpful people all around. Must be Xmas spirit. | Campbell Singer | 14/12/2016 |
Bagged from one car space at junction of main road and Midshires way track, previously that day doing an 8.9 mile walk on Thirkelow Rocks, High Edge, Hollins Hill, Oliver Hill and Axe Edge. Then driving to and bagging Grin Low, nice weather. | DanTrig | 23/09/2016 |
With Jo, linear walk from Dove Holes along Cowlow Lane, then faint path up to Castle Naze Fort and then along Short Edge to Black Edge, then onto Combs Head, before descending to the Roman Road and going along the A5004 to Buxton. Weather; generally cloudy with sunny intervals, humid, moderate visibility due to the misty conditions. | amblerbob | 15/09/2016 |
From end of road to south east- just room for one car at junction with main road. | Mark Sims | 02/04/2016 |
