From A591 Rough How Bridge. 11 km, 540 m asc. Up by Shoulthwaite Farm and the forest track above Shoulthwaite Gill to The Benn. S to regain the track to Castle Crag. Down E to the dam and by the permissive path to Great How. Back by Bridge End and Smaithwaite. https://www.flickr.com/photos/samandjo/albums/72177720310334239SalmonJoe05/08/2023
First day of last go at the Birketts. Light showers. Found a way up and down Castle Rock through head-high bracken. Then a pleasant walk up Castle Crag and The Benn. Joyce took the low road back to Castlerigg campsite while I walked back over 3 boggy and pathless Synges: Bleaberry Fell SE Top, Dodd Crag and Pike. Good views.BURGESS02/07/2023
Road remains closed over dam, so parked in parking area at the start of Raven Crag track. Up the steep Ascent, on to Castle crag, over to Castle Crag, then down the more gentle but longer descent on forestry track.matty1971b01/07/2023

With Sarah Evans, parked at Rosthwaite and went from there, did reverse ascent and descent to last time, up Pennybridge Dub side and down Broadslack Gill. Post work walk, nice sunny summer evening.Ruth Mackay27/05/2021
With Cerys Walford, very sunny and hot, stunning views from the top so spent at least an hour sat at the top just talking and appreciating. Parked at UU Legburthwaite car park, walked over the dam road and up the most direct way with only a short detour round the track to avoid a steep section. Went to Castle Crag to investigate the fort and had lunch at the top of there, looking down Shoulthwaite Gill. Could see some climbers on Iron Crag/ Goat Crag. Then came down via the forest tracks through the forest and around the base of the The Benn back to the road.Ruth Mackay24/04/2021

Perhaps it is an optical illusion but at first the top is invisible and then it is obvious and you wonder how you didn't see it. Another well-worth visiting top. A gate on the forest road leads to the path to the fort, then an anti-clockwise spiral to the top.Alan Moore14/10/2020

Climbed up from layby just past the Thirlmere car Park using the Benn round route. Turned onto the makeshift road made by the machinery felling trees and repairing the area after the storm damage. At the the top, straight over, down and up to the grassy mound with sign - Castle crag Fort. Narrow footpath clockwise spiral to summitkeenwalker18/07/2019
