Solo from Loch Turret car park on a bright & clear day with decent views. Walked along the track beside the loch until reaching Allt Bhaltair where a grassy track leads into the notch. This becomes a path which eventually leads up to the main track over the tops. Shortcut up short heather to meet this track near top of Ton Eich & then followed it winding all the way to the summit. Track has been significantly extended compared to OS map turning sharp R where grouse butts are marked to S of summit. Dropped down using track to N of Gilbert's Burn and took shortcut S back to the Loch Turret track over short grass. Saw ravens, a buzzard & a sparrowhawk gliding effortlessly over my head. | NotReallyABagger | 08/04/2024 |
Loch Turret cp, along E side of loch then up S slope of A Chairidh on pleasant short grass. A bit boggy after all the rain. Up into mist to small cairn. E then SE descent and climb up Auchnafree, mainly easy going but tricky navigation in mist. S descent and track past Gilberts burn then E to non existent track, though areas had easier walking. To Choinneachain then narrow path NE round Blue Craigs and up Stonefield Hill. Some peat hags. Descent via interesting stepped cairn to track to just before Barvick Burn. Small path SE to track and easy path S to Barvick Trig. Same back to contouring track to cp. 25km, 800m climb. Finally mist cleared about 4:30pm. | Lynnebe | 20/03/2024 |

Solo | garbo1103 | 08/08/2023 |
Tracks along Loch Turret and up towards Auchnafree Hill. Returned to track junction and on to Gilbert's Burn then off-piste east in search of track shown on 1:25000 OS map. No track found, so pathless across moorland to Choinneachain Hill, rejoined main track and took the long loop back to the car park. | TRG318 | 23/07/2023 |
From Loch Turret reservoir car park. CW circular walk to Carn Chois - Ben Chonzie - Biorach a Mheannain - A'Chairidh - Auchnafree Hill. In cloud most of the day from the car park, with some rain coming later than forecast. Mostly cleared up by final descent so some views back up the valley. Good paths to Chonzie then largely free format thereafter - old remaining fence posts a useful handrail at times. Steep descent back down to reservoir. With Gillian. | richard69 | 30/04/2023 |
Snowy walk from Loch Turret dam using tracks out and back. | rjf35 | 12/04/2023 |
Nice clockwise loop along the loch to start then stayed high and traversed back on the tracks until we were above the dam car park. A quick off-piste descent and we were back at the car. | mike__riley | 04/03/2023 |
Auchnafree Hill from Loch Turret. Walkhighlands route | hummusg | 26/01/2023 |
Parked by the dam and biked in to NN796300. Then did a clockwise circuit of the five Simms. Despite the rain yesterday all the streams crossing the track to the head of the glen we passable. Made a return dog leg up the steep SE slopes of Biorach a’ Mheannain. Followed round remaining 4 Simms and the made use of the track on the west of the massif back down to my bike. 25km. | BaggerGutt | 16/11/2022 |
Along tracks from the Turret dam, short cut the big dogleg before heading up the hillside. Combined with Coinneachean Hill for a good round | Rockdoctor | 29/08/2022 |

further to PGCE's log, the dog must have been called Saoirse as there is a metal sheet with that name welded into it 2008-2020. started at the parking in the sma glen, up glen almond on well maintained road, didn't realise there was a ford to cross, which was quite deep. crossed further upstream of the main crossing as there were some stepping stones which were quite slippery. On the ascent i noticed a foot bridge a hundred metres or so down stream (near the red barn and static caravans). Weather was closing in, but still a beautiful walk with track all of the way to summit.24km in 4hrs | Nicky C | 15/01/2022 |
1/2 Time includes 1h 21m cycling. From N with Auchnafree. Biked to Larichfraskhan, looped from there on foot. Very windy, cold wind. Sunny bits, some very light showers, both summits clear. | Rounsfell | 03/11/2021 |
Solo MTB from Turret dam. Very steep ascent from lochside on good track. Rideable to summit. Brilliant decent via track to SE and Choinneachain Hill. Back to the distillery for coffee and cake. | John Lee | 29/07/2021 |
From Newton Bridge. Excellent track alongside the delightful River Almond accompanied by the gregarious calls and behaviour of what I was subsequently told were goosanders. Up the track on the north side of Allt Coire Chultrain. OS 1:25,000 has this ending short of a shelter, but a reasonable ATV track continues WNW towards the fence line. Featureless heathery moorland to the summit. Then on to Beinn na Gainimh. | Owen B | 10/07/2021 |
From A' Chairidh. Followed faint path near old fence line. | KeithByTheC | 17/06/2021 |

Small cairn may now be a larger one: I met a keeper on the summit rebuilding the cairn with added stone. When I asked, he said he was burying his favourite dog, which was 12 years old. Forgot to ask its name. Loch Turret circuit. Carn Chois, Ben Chonzie, Biorach a'Mheannain, A' Chairidh, Auchnafree, Stonefield Hill, Choinneachain Hill. | PGCE | 05/07/2020 |

Parked at Newton Bridge (11:45). Bike up glen to track junction at 851318 (12:10). Walked up track to castle (12:45) and on to Beinn na Gainimh. Overcast and hazy. Crawled under electric fence to 725 point; steeply down W to track & glen. Up river, crossed bridge, then up track to summit of Auchnafree Hill, just in cloud. Some drizzle on descent E then NE past Eagle's Rock to bridge and back to bike (18:10) and car (18:25). | dbb | 23/07/2018 |
Part of loop from Glen Turret car park to Auchnafee Hill and Choinneachain Hill. | PsyCrow | 23/06/2018 |
Parked near dam, lots of building work happening so glad to drive the pot holed single track on a Good Friday. Sleet lower down and white out minor blizzard on top. Found top easily, but got lost twice on the descent. Only took just under 4 hours. | Jhimmy | 30/03/2018 |

Weather fair. | MountainMac | 21/07/2016 |
This can be turned into quite a challenging walk by picking a day of deep fresh snow, swimming straight up Ton Eich, wading through the snow drifts in the peat hags at the col and then merely strolling across the plateau to the summit! It makes it into a very scenic and lovely walk as well. | Gill | 17/01/2016 |
From Loch Turret dam. Gail force winds, rain and hail on the summit. Planning to do again in better weather with Ben Chonzie. | Stevend1 | 03/01/2016 |
