A slow stroll with Dee. Much conversation. A lovely hill; lingered long at the summit enjoying the views.Jon F26/04/2023
From layby parking off B976.JasonStark23/12/2022
Parked at Mill of Sterin. Knee-deep snow all the way up through the forest. Heavy snowfall continued , turning this walk into an exciting winter expedition! Up firebreak and boulders onto Creag Bheag. Emerged from the forest into a windy, whiteout. Fabulous walk up to the summit then over to the big cairn for more photos. Very careful drive back to Ballater. With Mntainman.Dangerous Dave10/12/2022
A very pleasurable walk, first through the forest and then clear track that winds up initially beside trees then up to the trig point. Beautful setting and Autumn colours. With GMacelizyanne10/10/2022
From the forest gate at NO 34054 95103 - parking for 4-5 cars on both sides of B976. Took the grassy forest track up through pinewoods to its edge, then hiked the undulating ridge up to the the twin summits of The Coyles of Muick, visiting both. Then returned by outward route, detouring to climb through pathless heather to the top of Meall Dubh on the way back. With DB and BC. 11.5km, with 535m of ascent.Man of Kernow128/05/2022
From car park beside Loch Ullachie and obvious track to top. Great viewpoint. Back down through forest to Prince Of Wales cairn and steep descent to forest tracks. Back by tracks to car. 7 mile round trip. With PCMsslynch14/01/2022
From end of forest road at Birkhall (NO346935), straight up the road to a junction at NO333926, continued SW on very overgrown track through obvious firebreak, crossing a road by a quarry at NO329922 en route, up to the forest edge and W to Meall Dubh, descended SE to join a path, following that S to and up both summits of Coyles of Muick, returning down the same fire break, but then taking the track N from the quarry, curving down and round to the junction at NO333926, thence back to Birkhall (2hr30m)kdbennett25/11/2021
10 tops from birkhill, craig of loinmuie, meall dubh, the coyles of muick repeat, craig megen, craig of inchnabobart, meall gorm, carn an daimh, caisteal na caillich south top, caisteal na caillich, conachcraig repeat, down to glen muick to pick up the bike for a downhill run back to the car.robertphillips03/07/2021
From Loch Ullachie (as per route in Dempster's 'Hughs' book). Good track through forest and then excellent paths along edge of forest all the way to the summit. Fine viewpoint. Police car at road end on return checking comings and goings.benalder28428/06/2021
Re-visit with GPS to confirm correct location (looks lower than NO 3298 9116 from both spots.Eddie25/06/2021
Followed the Hughs book route starting at the parking spot above Loch Ullachie, take the track through the forest then obvious path all the way to the summit. Lovely walk. I then followed Hughs book route north westish off the summit to meet the burn and then followed to the end of the track over the Girnock burn, track back to road and then 2km of road walking. 9.4 miles 4hrs walking time. Did have a look at creag Ghiubhais on the way back after working out the best line of attack but short gaiters and long scratchy heather for a little way up the deer fence decided this was not a good move and better saved for the winter months, when vegetation is shorter.JulieB17/06/2021
Parked near bins at 349928. 200 yards south turned up forest road, right and then left and after 1.2 miles right again. From 335914 turned uphill in the non forested area. Great views, 2.25 hours return. Solo.bolton01/06/2021
Via forest track, accidentaly over Loinmure, back down into valley and up to summit in snow. Very windy and cold there, stunning viewsiangalbraith05/05/2021
Set off from track end at Loch Ullachie on a still, clear and cold day. After recent snow fall unsure of what conditions would be like up high. Not quite as much new snow as expected but still hard going in places. Creag Phiobaidh first, Tom an Lagain and follow tree line to Meall Dubh and on to The Coyles of Muick. Retraced steps to 917327 to pick up end of track in woods passing a smart hide. Direct ascent of Creag of Loinmuie and descent NE to forest track. Followed this on obvious vehicle route along side of hill. After locked gate took left hand fork to return to B976 a few hundred yards short of car.sarahk23/01/2021
From Birkhall and through the forestry tracks. No evidence of any forestry works today. The views once you get out of the trees were superb.Peterb04/11/2020
3 hours spare after work at Crathie before dark and determined to make the most of dwindling evenings so despite it now being the 3rd day of continual rain I chose a forest approach hill for shelter and dressed ready for a hammering. Oddly at 3.45pm as I set off the rain relented to gentle drizzle whilst higher up above the forest it merged into ghostly gloom - producing the startling effect of my seeing an eagle perched on a cairn -which turned out to be wayward christmas tree. The gloom swirled to reveal atmospheric now you see it - now you dont snapshot views of heather hillsides and sweeping slopes. Good stalkers path along top of forest to slosh along from Meall Dubh. Very acceptable. 1 hr 10mins up from Birkhall by the straight forest track (and rough top bit)- clad in boots & full waterproofs. Back over Loinmuie. 2hr 5min round trip -incredibly only mizzling (a fine drizzle) throughout. Very lucky as drove through heavy downpours on drive home.Chris Pearson05/10/2020
Track from NE - ends approx. NO 329 923. Up rough ride to forest edge. Good path up edge forest to top.carole engel05/07/2020
Escaping the worst of the wind by walking up track from the NE, through some windfelled trees near coll. the across open fellside to the two large cairns. True summit by small cairn a few hunded meters along.cjo07/03/2020

Nice little hill with good views down the DEE valley, visited with Big JNozzer03/06/2019
From Mill of Sterin. Great little hill with great views.BigJ03/06/2019
A tedious hill, the forest tracks have shallow gradients and it seemed to take forever to get anywhere. From small aprking area at Birkhall, NO346935, SW up straight track, then a R and a L to the high point at NO329922 from where overgrown extraction lanes were used to attain the ridge. A good path then lead SSE to the two tops. Two cairns, no doubt once magnificent, but now partly collapsed, with their innards spilling out like some disembowelled beasts. In reverse, a cabin was found at NO327917, served by a 4x4 track - this was followed back to the high point on the 'top track' at NO330918 and was then followed down. but it was a long, long, way down.Isbjorn30/05/2019
On TGOC 2019. Approached across rough ground from the west. Continued to Meall Dubh and Loch Ullachie. Spotted an adder in the coire to the west.alistairpooler19/05/2019

From Mill of Sterin, following my nose up the forest tracks, just by taking the branches going up hill. Nose following required using a 1:25K map, because it is wrong. The 1:50K map shows the tracks correctly, and also shows the wooden hut just past the second gate. The right hand track after this gate (before the hut) leads to a wide grassy area, head up this, keeping to the edge of the trees, and a path is found leading to the mini bealach below the hill, turn right to the big cairn, then follow a grassy path to the top. Much more direct than it seems.Gill10/09/2018
A couple of impressive cairns and two tops that seem to be roughly the same height.summitter21/07/2018
Bike from Ballater to a high point on forest track at around NO329923, then on foot. Recorded route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2018/05/the-coyles-of-muick-no328910-601m.htmlGayle21/05/2018
Mountain bike from Ballater to forest gates just past Sterinbeg on minor road to NE of top. Pushed bike to highest point of road then threaded through old forestry rubbish to meet a path coming from N. Easy walk to top and superb mountain bike ride all the way down.trimarc217/05/2018

Evening walk from Mill of Sterin. Via forest tracks zig zag upwards. Up obvious firebreak onto ridge and both summits. Nice viewpoint in darkening skies.... ticks everywhere :(N.Morters10/07/2017
Parked at NO349928. Ascended on tracks to NO335914, then up ridge to cairn and onwards to summit.raffemeister12/12/2016
From minor road at no 346 935, with mora my dog.some of forest tracks are not in use and well overgrown.BLACKHILL30/06/2016
Visited both tops, each with a cairn. The one to the SW with the small cairn is supposed to be the higher, but my GPS only read 598, whereas at the base of the large cairn it read 602. I'm confused!NormanW13/06/2016
From Glen GirnockJA15/03/2016
Up Glen Girnock, river crossing - easy under normal conditions, then up onto Meall Dubh. Followed by The Coyles of Muick, Craig of Loinmuie. Then down ridge on reasonable path, over Carn a Bhealaidh, Creag Liath. Left path to go over Tom an Lagain and onto Craig Phiobaidh, descent down to road at Littlemill.clashcityrocker06/02/2016
With Jenx, from estate roads through woodland. At top track direct up through scrubby land to summit. Big cairn and what looked like main top nearby.nordicstar23/10/2015
From the B976, great ridge walk, fantastic viewshillsman07/08/2015
From near Birkhall. Landrover tracks to 330923, very rough track to 326920, then rough path to summit.Topographer5709/07/2015
from birkhall tracks to near summit.robertphillips07/12/2014
Parked at 346926 and followed lovely winding tracks up through the forest to the observation shelter 800m NW of summit at forest edge. Then a grand ascent up the path to the most impressive cairn. A 4.5 star MarilynThearlaichdubh10/09/2014
Solo trip, park near Birkhall and follow forest road SW then S along ridgeInvicta1418/04/2014

On forest roads from Birkhallneimcv26/09/2013
From Birkhall, NO 34617 93550, if you follow the endless highway, forest track really, it takes you up to a swanky looking hut between the two Hawaii 5-0s or whatever 5H stands for. I went over M Dubh on way up and C of Loinmuie on way down. Last night's rain meant snow and ice up there. Pity about the ugly pile of stones near the summit. No need to wade rivers, either.Martin R25/11/2012
Solo, from NO 327 889. Nothing like a good river crossing to start a walk on a cold November morning!amswanston09/11/2012
