From Braes of Coul via Newton and Gairlaw. | Winterfloodian | 11/01/2024 |
Gill's route from the large parking area as far as Gairlaw then across a field of rough grazing and up through grass and heather to the summit and its three stone cairn. I returned across the northern flank of the Carrach and the track leading pas the shooting club at Hilton. Red kites in the sky and a peacock by the track at Newton Steading. | Nick Down1 | 28/08/2023 |
Parking at Braes of Coul, walk on track to Gairlaw then through pasture uphill to top with a few small stones. | willyross | 17/03/2022 |
Parked at the gates to Balintore Castle. Route as per Summiteer. Returned same way. 4 miles 1hr 34 walking time. | JulieB | 05/11/2021 |
From entrance gate of Balintore castle. Encountered farmers but just exchanged friendly waves. No views from the summit due to driving rain and cloud. | Adrian | 22/09/2021 |
As per Summitter and parked besides the impressive entrance gate and walls of Balintore Castle. Followed track that leads from the houses opposite to Muir Wood and then to just north of Hilton, continuing to the ruined Gairlaw. Just before reaching Gairlaw a gate enables easy access to the NW slope of Mile Hill. | curlebd | 05/09/2021 |
From Braes of Coul | BLACKHILL | 24/06/2021 |
Parking in a sensible place proved a premium as I circumnavigated the base of this hill. Eventually I found a good spot besides the impressive entrance gate and walls of Balintore Castle. A lovely track leads from the houses opposite to Muir Wood and then to just north of Hilton, continuing to the ruined Gairlaw. Just before reaching Gairlaw a gate enables easy access to the NW slope of Mile Hill. The small summit cairn was in pieces so I re-erected it for future Marilyners. | summitter | 12/06/2021 |
English residents at Kinclune to south not happy with drive up/parking but OK with parking at drive entrance to south - spot height 203. Asked to use gate just before fork in track at NO 3113 5593, taking gates via duck pond. Nice walk. | carole engel | 13/05/2021 |
My last Marilyn in section 7. Started at a large parking area W of Braes of Coul, along road, then easy, wide track with excellent views past Newton, Muir Wood, below Hilton, past Gairlaw, lastly crossing an open field. After this field, left the track to cross a little ford to the R , where a rough ATV track heads towards a gate below Mile Hill. Rough grass to the summit, marked by 3 stones. Longer than other routes but no angry farmers or wifies to shout at you, no fences to climb and views of hills rather than the lowlands. | Gill | 21/04/2021 |
From Roadside Cottage, parking on verge, NO302552. Up track then path to NO302562, where old gate on R in EF. Up The Carrach to another old gate beside pond at NO310568, then to col at NO313570, where met nasty BWF with electric strands on both sides - almost impossible not to make contact - either electric was off or Goretex is a good insulator. And another, older BWF, next to the first. | Isbjorn | 08/06/2019 |
5 of 5: From B951 Jn near Roadside Cottage. | ChrisR | 26/04/2018 |
Via The Welton and path to gate at NO 31008 56653 which avoided live electric fence and then one fence to climb below summit. | Lionel Bidwell | 29/01/2018 |
With wee Pete | SpudGunn | 28/08/2017 |
Bot of a boring hill with a lot of barbed wired fences. Some quite high | tallblond | 02/07/2017 |
Following Creigh Hill. Parked a road end leading to Kinclune. Walked up to farm, then through easy grass fields almost due north. Gates at top of each field just the last fence below summit to straddle. Damp, clouds rolling in and drizzle. | N.Morters | 11/03/2017 |
Weather fair. | MountainMac | 20/01/2016 |
Asked local advice on where to park for this Marilyn. So parked on the access road to Kinclune. Easy ascent form there. Anyhow the farmer nearly lynched me on my return for walking on 'his' hill and parking on the drive way. Avoid this if you can. | Play2End | 01/11/2015 |
Access from N was blocked by pheasant shooters. Also angry farmers wife at Auldallan wouldn't let me access the burn crossing. However, having parked dodgily near Auldallan it was straight forward ascent of an imposing hill, though access from S would be better. | Thearlaichdubh | 20/12/2014 |
with Grant Campbell. | clashcityrocker | 15/12/2014 |
parked at minor road junction muir of holm woods road to kinclune then through fields to top. | robertphillips | 01/11/2014 |
From the north, E of Auldallan. Not the best access point I think, but easy enough route once on the hill. | amswanston | 31/10/2014 |
My 1000th Marilyn! Farmer's daughter said I could park next to farm (Kinclune). Short tramp across farmland . Not my favourite kind of hill. | AndrewFinnimore | 25/09/2014 |
Solo | HFB | 16/08/2014 |
W Jenx, unlike others parked to North after Cat Law. Room for 1/2 cars in verge-side parking near two gates at @GR 304584. Top visible across fields. Angle down to wet area, cross with aid of wall. Old track up otherside and across fields to track then onto hill. Back nearly the same way, watch the burn it can be tricky to cross! No stones/cairn on top, just grass!! | nordicstar | 29/06/2014 |
From RHW's start position. Parking on N verge between dwellings. | jimbloomer | 15/05/2014 |
Solo trip | Invicta14 | 19/02/2014 |
After doing Hare Cairn in morning. From B951 using road past Kinclure. Tore breeks on barbed wire fence SE of summit. At least electric fence was not working. | russell61 | 15/04/2013 |
From road junction near Broadmuir, past Kinclune and then over the fields. Friendly horses as well as their riders! 'Pile of stones at top' is a bit of an exaggeration. Good viewpoint though. | Martin R | 23/11/2012 |
traversed hill north to south | AlisonFox66 | 09/03/2012 |
Sunny, calm, cold, snow and ice, good views. | iangalbraith | 16/12/2011 |
From road to S up lane from Roadside Cottage, then round back of a narrow wood. Bit of a dip between that and Mile Hill. Met people on horses, seemed friendly. Came back more directly. | Aye Jimmy | 19/06/2011 |
Ascended from the north on a damp, misty afternoon. | JohnW | 04/08/2009 |
Crept up from N, rooks, a pair of buzzards and galloping heifers announcing my presence to the shooters in Aucharroch Wood. | Eddie | 30/08/2003 |
Parked on B951. Agricultural route with beasts running wild on bridal path. Arran on short lead. Long grass and thistles up to horizon, steeply down again over double BWF and on grass to top at 14.00. No cairn. | arranc | 20/07/2003 |
