From the car park to the SSE. Up the ridge. Enjoyable route with good views. Visited trig and summit.PGCE09/02/2024
Climbed from the car park at Little Black Hill. Ascended the obvious route via the Cat's back ridge to the trig of Black Hill - this arete was lovely and narrow - really a highlight of the day. Lovely views east into England and west towards the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons in Wales. Continued onwards along a minor path on the much broader ridge to the northwest. Had to leave the minor path and go across heathery terrain to reach the Offa's Dyke path. Turned southeast to reach the rather ill-defined highest point of Herefordshire - which is either called Black Mountain or Twyn Llech (prefer the latter). Difficult to say exactly where it is, but the website seems to have it right. Pen-y-Fan clearly in view. This was our 2nd county top of the day on our 3 day 10 county top challenge with my school group (26 students aged 14-15, plus 2 colleagues). The students seemed to find the name of the hill on the other side of the Gospel Pass amusing. I'm not sure why! Returned the same way.jamessteel10004/04/2023
Parked at Black Hill car park, Descended to Olchon Valley before trudging to the top of the ridgeline, took in Pen-y-Garn Fawr and then North Daren before doing a U-Turn and heading back over to Black Mountain South Top, Black Mountain and Hay Bluff, before heading back round to Black Hill and descending over The Cats Back, great day if you ignore the icy padstones and boggy start!lboutside19/11/2022

From car park along Cat's Back, interesting ridge continued over Hay Bluff for great views and Black Mountain as far as south top. FP which cuts across the Olchon brook near Blaen has had signs removed and impeded by barbed wire/ wooden barrier (now removed). Returned to car park to find I was was nearly blocked in.Nick Canute02/04/2022

Up the cats back across to trig point in lovely sunshine, travelled on another half an hour until the steel grey clouds descended & the rain poured down!! Made our way back with low visibility. Great fun although the dogs did look a bit miserable.Piddbear22/10/2021

Long day ridge walking in the Black Mountains: Start from Llanthony, ascending Chwarel y Fan, Twyn Tal-y-cefn, Rhos Dirion, Twmpa, Hay Bluff, Black Hill, Black Mountain, Black Mountain South Top, Pen-y-Garn Fawr & Red Daren before a tired return to Llanthony. Super walk in the hills on a bright crisp winter’s day.Cas-gwent18/02/2016
Ground near trig seems slightly higher so stomped around the possible high points.clivevilla13/09/2015
Parked at SO28853283 Up over Black Hill to Hay Bluff. Return on Offa's Dyke Path. Great views. All paths clear except in Olchon Valley when bracken was high.Arbie06/09/2015
Walk 3 Hatterrall Ridge from 'Walk! the Brecon Beacons', except came back along the Cat's Back rather than via the Olchon Valley. Parked at Black Hill picnic site, headed down into and across the valley and up to the ridge. Some of the sunken paths in the valley blocked by trees, bracken very high on way up to ridge. Watch out for wobbly paving slabs on ridge. Took in Black Mountain South, Black Mountain and Black Hill. Slight confusion about finding right path to turn back along but easy once we found it.clyoung31/08/2015
Walk 2 Crib y Garth from 'Walk! the Brecon Beacons'. Parked at Black Hill picnic site, headed down the road we'd come up, climbed up through Olchon Valley and came back along Cat's Back. Icy and very muddy but straight forward route.clyoung17/02/2015
3/6 After a drop down from Red Daren a climb up from the car park along ridgeFergalh25/01/2015
Parked at entrance to Upper Cwm Farm and followed path up past Blackhill Farm. Climbed to the ridge and then north west to Black Hill. Continued along the ridge to Offa's Dyke and then south south east to Black Mountain summit and Black Mountain South Top. Finally descended heading east across the valley and returned past Black Hill Farm again (new fences up and path not clear). A magnificent walk from start to finish.callumorr12/10/2014
