Parked at forestry track gate at 634285. Up track then right fork to wooden gate beside locked metal gate. Left (north) up narrow gap between fence (left) and forest to reach firebreak. Through young plantings in firebreak - generally on left-hand (northern) edge - to summit. | vuirich | 08/08/2023 |
As per dbb and others. Beyond end of fence a faint path/deer trod makes for easier going. Easily bypassed the saplings by going through mature trees on right, holding poles in front to snap off dead twigs At top of firebreak a faint path can be found at last tree on left side. | Ben Rinnes | 15/05/2023 |
Parked in forestry track gateway 634285, left at fork, then followed left hand side of fence line up through firebreak to summit. | PeteF | 22/04/2023 |
Good parking at forest road entrance, west of Tullich. Uphill on forest road, left fork through gate then immediately right to follow fence to firebreak and double summit. Back same way. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 02/04/2023 |
With Malky and Jackie after Stac Gorm. Flies. Through forestry, low branches. Good to have local guides. Overcast and windy. | Rounsfell | 06/08/2022 |
Followed dbb route. Young trees in firebreak still easily passed. | Lionel Bidwell | 25/04/2022 |
Shona and Diesel. | JimA | 21/03/2022 |
Parked at 633285 (10:10) and followed forest track to fork. Left through gate then right up the firebreak following the fence. There are young trees planted in the break after the fence ends; these are about 1m high and easy to pass now, but this will change. Easy walk to the summit afterwards. Finished 11:25. Dry; good views. | dbb | 23/06/2021 |
We took the track past Loch a' Choire into the forest. Looked for the overgrown path that should bring us to the west of Dubh-lochan, but floundered amongst bog, heather and conifers. Eventually finding a way out of the worst it we surfaced about a km west of the summit, got to the top(s) and found a much easier way back, SE across open ground to another forestry track. | summitter | 04/06/2021 |
Parked at RSPB car park. Ascent by right-hand track, past quarry and then through non-dense plantation to rough open ground and eventually the summit. Descended by Peterb's route below which is much the easier of the two. | benalder284 | 16/05/2021 |
Track then along the fence line to the top. Fab views. | Play2End | 07/09/2019 |
As per others, parked at the forest track, up past Loch a'Choire, then the right fork, over an illegally locked gate, past the quarry, then up the cairned ATV track heading up the side of the sitka plantation through the native pines. This does, indeed, go straight up the hill to open ground, then tussocks over bumps and dips to the summit. Visited both cairns. Not the most spectacular hill but decent enough views. | Gill | 09/06/2019 |
From RSPB car park, with Ellie dog. | BLACKHILL | 22/05/2019 |
Solo. Followed Isbjorn’s route from the south. However, went straight up from the small cairn rather than following the curl left. On reaching the open ground above the forest it is easy enough to cross heathery ground to the summit of Stac na Cathaig. On the descent went over the rock and a larger cairn to the SSW for good measure and then down my ascent route in order to avoid the possibility of getting tangled up in the forest. Perfect timing as the rain started 2 minutes after I reached the car. | pwbellarby | 20/04/2019 |
1/3 short hills.. parked at track just west of Tullich. Followed track until branched, took right fork to the high point, then a harvester track out of woods. Tussocky amble to both summits, One that appears lower has the larger cairn. | N.Morters | 12/01/2019 |
From forest access gate at NH633285. Up forest track to divide, took R branch E uphill, through gate, to old quarry on L. The 1st 'ride' on the L, 100m E of the quarry, isn't a ride - it's a dead-end extraction line and you'll be bull-dozing through the trees beyond. There is no 'ride' in the usual sense of the word - 125m beyond the quarry (small cairn) there is a distinct vegetation change from the densely packed conifers (W) to the more open pines (E). The perimeter of the dense conifers goes straight up, then curls L and, where it exits the forest, its direction leaves you looking directly at the summit. | Isbjorn | 27/12/2018 |
Second visit, with Chris Peart | Colin Crawford | 07/11/2018 |
By the Peterb route - excellent! | Chris Peart | 07/11/2018 |
Same route as Dave McG and PeterB | Erik B | 22/04/2018 |
By Peter B's route, very direct and not particularly rough. Suspect it's currently the best way to go from this side of the hill, hopefully the newly planted trees won't impede access in the future. | Dave McG | 04/04/2018 |
Left car at RSPB car park but could have moved it to start of forestry track W of Tullich. Followed easy ride at bend NE of quarry to gain open moor. On descent started down well defined SE ride from NH63882984, but couldn't spot the dog leg to SW and ended up forcing a way through unpleasant forestry to E corner of quarry. | Smudge | 25/12/2017 |
Parked at the forestry track at 634 285 and followed the track to where it split. I took the left fork and went through the new gate. Here on your immediate right are some new plantings and the not too obvious firebreak which if you stick to the fence on the right hand side takes you up to within a couple of hundred metres of the summit. | Peterb | 05/12/2017 |
Parked at forest track. Then up to quarry taking next fire break. Once on open ground GPS used to find summit as cloud around 400m mark. | garyhoney | 30/06/2017 |
Left car at start of forest track. Used fire break to reach open ground and found summit in mist and drizzle. | wozzat | 30/06/2017 |
Parked at forest track 634286, used track to high point then through mature trees to open ground. Sunny, warm, calm and great clear views. | iangalbraith | 26/03/2017 |

#569 In cloud. The key is taking the left off of the fire-break. | tim747 | 18/03/2016 |
Parked at 634285 and headed north and then east. After the quarry took the firebreak against the larch trees to the summit. Solo. One hour and twenty minutes. | bolton | 07/02/2016 |
From south w Jenx up forest track easily enough. After the quarry took the firebreak alongside larches to open fell then 400m of manageable heather to high point. Snowy cold day with good views. | nordicstar | 14/01/2016 |
An easy hill in nice surroundings. | jenx | 14/01/2016 |
From RSPB car park to S. I wouldn't recommend the route I took off-path through the forest, which is shown (together with write-up) at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/five-that-was-surprise.html | Gayle | 11/05/2015 |
Parked at L Ruthven. and up from S. Felling. Get to forest rd junction go though 200m of felling crap and as you skirt the edge of the remaining trees the ride appears. | Thearlaichdubh | 04/05/2015 |
from the south up forestry tracks then fire break to the top. | robertphillips | 14/03/2015 |
From nature reserve car park. Took ride near high point of forest road (just after quarry) then fork left at ride junction. | PeteN | 16/11/2014 |
Parked at the east end of Loch Duntelchaig. Followed the forestry road right round and then cut up from the south on to the summit. Completed by thrashing down through deep heather to the loch. | BigJ | 13/11/2014 |
Track from the south, easily enough through trees to summit. | AndrewFinnimore | 23/01/2014 |
From Loch Ruthven Nature Reserve car park. Took track north past Loch a'Choire, then track east at junction. Then by partially hidden firebreak near high point of track, emerging onto open moor. Visited both summits. Higher northern one the finer. Returned the same way. | Man of Kernow1 | 09/07/2013 |
Ditto MT but found shorter route down. Attempting to park closer than the NNR CP may be ill advised. | Topographer57 | 09/07/2013 |
From S at gate and obvious track through forest. Track past lochan until it swings to left at junction. After junction break in trees to R, quite boggy and passing a dead deer to open ground then summits. Furthest cairn is highest. | Aye Jimmy | 25/10/2011 |
Solo - field work | HFB | 07/06/2011 |

Solo - field work | HFB | 08/06/2010 |
Take forestry path, turn right at the fork and continue to a gap in the trees. Ascend through gap to a wet heathery plateau, and then to summit. | Buteobuteo | 03/06/2010 |
miserable day, pouring rain. nice to complete the little cluster of 4 close together marilyns, but that's about all that can be said !! | hjaltland | 11/01/2009 |
