Walked across from Gairy of Pulnee. Descended directly to Bell Knowe where I was parked. Absolutely dreadful terrain of thigh-deep tussock grass almost the whole way down, until hitting the bracken! It took ages to get down, having to be really careful. I do not recommend this route! Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 08/10/2022 |
Parked at Bruce's stone car park and followed the Southern Upland way to White Laggan Bothy to find a path that can be followed to the Bealach between Bennan hill and Gairy of Pulnee, from here the route took in Bennan hill, Gairy of Pulnee, Millfore and Cairngarroch, you can drop off north to follow the Droughandruie strand to reach the southern Upland way and retrace your steps back to the car park. Eighteen miles in Eight hours with 4000ft of ascent. (parking on the bend south of Craigencallie house and walking West to White Laggen Bothy would make the route shorter) | WAYNE ROWLETT | 11/07/2022 |
From Black Loch with Jan up track then decent atv/path to summit of Millfore. Then cross country over to Cairngarroch (decent path from stile) before returning to Millfore. Gairy of Pulnee was left for another day. | SS | 09/04/2022 |
A little extra at the end of the 'ridge'. Descent from here was slow - I had to be careful on the deep tussocks in order to avoid twisting or breaking an ankle. | langskill | 03/04/2022 |
Started from A712 just E of Craigdews. Followed vehicle track and crossed to path running above W side Tonderghie Burn to join forestry road until NW of Poultrybuie Hill. Short rough ascent to Poultrybuie Hill, then back to track for a while and then short climb to nice summit of Munwhul. Back to track and across to walk N around W side of (felled) forestry to reach ridge and steady ascent to Cairngarroch (quite complex summit area, visiting various high points as well as the cairn. Returned along ridge and continued to Millfore, the interesting top of Gairy of Pulnee, back to Millfore SW top, easy descent S and across to Fell of Talnotry. Descent through forest ride and then rough felled forest to forestry road followed on S side of Black Loch and back to start. Mainly misty and drizzle but some clearances | RobertP | 23/11/2021 |
Followed atv tracks from Millfore, became vague and boggy at col, straight forward ascent from SW.
slightly more difficult descent to the east back to van near Bell Knowe, tough on knees though tussocky grass and died back bracken. | mntainman | 09/11/2021 |
Drove in on minor road & parked near end of road south of Craigencallie House. Followed forestry track SW to disused quarry then follow easiest line WSW to summit. Grey & windy at summit. Then off to bag the P11 called Millfore SW Top where it was calm + sunny. Back over Millfore for sunny summit photographs for SS's M600. Then onward to Cairngarroch on easy ground before a porridge like descent back to the car underneath. | Dugswell2 | 09/11/2021 |
Parked at disused pit ~200m S from end of tarmac road (NX 5023 7725). Walked N 100m, then headed due W across some really bad and quite steep ground. This one was a chore. | jonglew | 04/09/2021 |
Attempted from the road just west from Droughandruie Strand (NX497791). Started ascent but as others have put it on their descent is that it is indeed a “nightmare of tussocks.” Deep and boggy which you fall into. Some patches of heather helpful.
Due to group size we decided to abort. It would be interesting to know how other people have tackled it! | 04pbake | 31/07/2021 |
Parked near the bend on the single track Craigencallie road. Good forestry track to the col between Munwhul and Millfore, a faint path to Munwhul and a surprisingly easy ascent of Millfore. A pleasant stroll to the SW Top (at least it would have been without a fierce south-easterly) and on to Gairy of Pulnee, descending by the White Lochan of Drigmorn and cutting across to Cairngarroch surprisingly easily and with only moderately damp feet. The descent from Cairngarroch, though, is a nightmare of tussocks. | Nick Down1 | 21/03/2020 |
Parking area 300m N. of the entrance to Craigencallie House at NX 5039 7813 - Over low fence opposite, across a bit of rough ground, over collapsed wall & followed path alongside the house's perimeter wall to stream - Took Anton's route up side of stream, passing the Pin Stone before reaching the ridge; bracken would be an issue in summer - SW up ridge for 650m or so to the cairn & rock outcrop. Continued to Millfore, Gairy of Pulnee & Bennan Hill. (S) | gerrybowes | 18/03/2020 |
6th top of 11 on a 30km route from Auchenleck car park to Murray's monument, climbing Bennan Hill, Gairy of Pulnee, Millfore Sw top, Millfore and Munwhul then I headed up steeply on a rocky/scree runnel through the Buckdas of Cairnbaber to reach easier terrain to walk and the interesting rocks at the top, recording 569m on an outcrop @ NX 49149 77549, 564m on the Glacial erratic boulder @ NX 49151 77559 and 571m at the Cairn @ NX 49160 77559. I continued NE over increasingly tussocky terrain to the Rocking stone, that has a nice aspect but no longer rocks! Difficult descent SE to Bell Knowe, heading for Darnaw.... | Dazingdale | 26/08/2018 |
From Gairy of Pulnee. 3rd of day after Millfore and Gairy of Pulnee. Steep descent east to the car at 502773. 6.5 miles and 3 hours 50 minutes solo. | bolton | 06/05/2018 |
With Smudge | SteveG | 25/03/2018 |
From road bend to E with Steve G. Fairly direct climb to join the broad NE ridge a little before the summit. | Smudge | 25/03/2018 |
A large cairn marks the summit although a nearby rock outcrop is of similar height. Ascended steeply from road to east over dead bracken and tussocky grass. A superb clear sunny day with great views all around. Staying at Minigaff YH for Trigger meet. | Denise | 24/03/2018 |
Straight forward ascent of the E slope to the levellish summit area with medium cairn and rock outcrops in grass/moss/heather. Fine weather, extensive views. | RichardM | 24/03/2018 |
Stile behind house, via house drive at NX 502779. Turn left for 30m to find good trod thru' bracken. Further trods higher up once over rocky band | carole engel | 17/09/2016 |
C/W round of cairngarroch, millfore, milfore sw top, gairy of pulnee, bennan hill, scars of milldown, lamachan hill, craignaw, mulldonach from craigencallie house. | robertphillips | 12/06/2016 |
From Craigencallie. I slanted across to below Garries, the lowest rocks using good animal tracks. Then, up its NE ridge, a struggle up deep and unpredictable tussocks. This wouls be worse in high summer as the bracken below Garries would be high as well! I didn't think the top had any intrinsic appeal, but it gave the route to a fine ascent of Millfore (qv for rest of my walk) via Buckdas of Cairnbaber. On my way back to Craigencallie I could make out a well worn route going between two crags immediately behind the house. Looked steep but an easier way up. Nesting Ravens and Peregrine Falcons on the crags added to the impressive nature of this side of the hill as they called and defended their nests. | pwheeler | 14/05/2016 |
From Craigencallie. As Peebs said - brutal. | chrisbien | 25/08/2015 |
From forestry track below Craigencallie House. Field top behind house has a stile to cross wall, the easier of the many possible routes up is by going up the right side of the stream through ferns/bracken and heather if you go left or further right it will be deep tussocks all the way. At flattish bit turn left on trod for 10/15mtrs then right on short grass uphill to crag, contour round on trod in heather then grass to top. | Anton | 01/08/2015 |
Cairngarroch, Millfore, Millfore SW top. | borderterrier | 08/07/2013 |
Direct ascent from the east-brutal 1000ft!. Not a good start to a walk to Lamachan Hill | peebs | 02/08/2012 |
Dullish summit (mist). | RHW | 21/03/2009 |
