From Snake pass summit , Pennine Way, then followed path down Hern clough and veered off aross heather to summit. Misty ascent , cloud cleared on the return . Remote Ethel, underwhelming summit.Lazylizzie14/12/2023
Solo walk out and back from the top of the Snake Pass. Along the PW to Hern Clough then follow a faint path on the N side of the clough over the The Swamp (not too bad if the can follow the very faint path) then continue on the path on NE side of the Alport Valley after about 0.6 mile go off-piste to the unmarked high spot.Glenelg13/10/2023
From W branch of Derwent Reservoir. Track, then ATV track up spur N of Black Clough. Returned via trig and Alport Castles.PGCE28/02/2023
In a circuit from Doctors Gate layby - with Featherbed Top. Took a while to locate the high point a tiny cairn there - an Ethel for what its worth. Have walked on the nearby ridge path fairly frequently.steveb200620/12/2022
Reached from the A57 on a Nineteen mile loop taking in the Five Ethel summits of Higher shelf stones, Bleaklow head, Alport moor, Mill hill and Featherbed top. 2800ft of accent on good paths throughout and taking Eight and half hours.WAYNE ROWLETT19/06/2022

From lay-by W of Alport Bridge on A57. The Tower, Alport Moor, Bleaklow Head and Higher Shelf Stones included before roughly following road back using permissive paths and footpaths. Good walking, even the parts tracing the road.welshyboyo04/07/2021
Parked at Birchin Bridge Car Park and bivvy'd at alport castle. Followed ridge round past the trig and on to alport moor, then up to bleaklow stones, on to Bleaklow Head and High Shelf stones to admire the crash site. Headed over to overwood moss before descending back to the car 25km 5.5 hrs excluding the sleep!Nicky C16/06/2021
From The Tower. Easy walk thanks to weeks of dry weather. Remote feel, nicely surrounded by hills. Returned via spur twixt Black Clough and Raven clough: peat hags to start then easy walking and nice track through woodland. Dark Peak compleat.Wycombe Wanderer24/04/2021

From road side parking on A57 near Doctor's Gate..Alan Caine02/09/2017
11.4 mile walk from Low Barn near snake pass, followed footpath south of River Ashop to Alport Bridge then followed footpath to Alport Castles Farm, climbed up onto ridge, walked north to Westend Moor trig and further along boggy intermittent tracks over rough terrain (Could have been worse if wetter) to the featureless summit of Alport Moor, our last 500m hill we needed in the Peak, then retraced our steps to Alport Castles and over Rowlee Pasture back to car via Rowlee Farm. Afterwards drove to and quickly bagged featureless Lodge Moor.DanTrig31/08/2017
Started along Nether North Grain to River Alport. Went along this to visit the wonderful waterfalls then NE to the summit. Saw numerous hares, snipe and grouse plus a couple of lizards. Views of kinder etc were fantastic. With Mart.John Eley23/07/2017

Agree probably the most remote top in Derbyshire. 9 mile round from top of Snake Pass. Along PW to sharp bend at Hern Clough then followed thin path above infant River Alport before breaking off left and up. Followed path north which then disappeared and spent about an hour through pathless peat hags before finding the PW again.Mark Sims12/06/2016
3/3 last of three. This day had everything rain, wind, sun, fog, snow, hailstones (Bleaklow Head/Higher Shelf Stones/Alport Moor)Fergalh30/04/2016
Solo. Cloud covered. My heart was not in it after doing The Tower on the way up.This was just another dull flog in the bog trying to find something to tell me it was six inches higher than the next bit. Where ever the summit was - It was close enough for me..Aimless Rambler18/03/2016
3rd hill of 5 today on a long traverse from Hadfield station to Edale station via Mouselow Castle, skirting Glossop, up Yellowslacks Brook to Bleaklow and then on Pennine way South where at some fords I branched off to head to Alport Moor, crossing Near Fork Grain and then up and down a prominence of 545 before the final pull upto the summit. This is very rough terrain and definitely slowed me down. The summit is pretty flat. Returned a slightly different way to walk along the ridge above the River Alport. Descended where I could see some stones and then took a heading back to the Pennine way.Dazingdale27/02/2016
With Jo, walk from Westend: Ditch Clough and West End Moor Trig to Alport Moor, returning via Alport Castles to Fairholmes cp. Weather; generally cloudy, cool breeze though warm later when sun appeared, good visibility.amblerbob15/08/2015

With Sam. Up from the corner of the reservoir to Alport Castle then along the top for a couple of miles. Best view of the dark peak from this moorland. Cut across to pick up the forestry track back and 7 1/2 miles round. This must be the most remote top in the Peak.simon and co11/07/2014
Circuit of Westend valley with Rod Payne. Also visited The Tower, Bleaklow Stones and Barrow Stones. Nice and boggy in parts!citygent06/05/2014
Missed this one after bagging,'The Tower'.Instead I took a bearing from the Trig and dropped into Nethering Clough to pick up a small track part way down the hill that eventually took me to Grains in the water, I followed this up Bleaklow stones, Bleaklow hill, Wain stone, Hern Stone, Higher Shelf stones, Featherbed top, Saukin ridge and then a steep descent to pick up a forestry track and then carefully walking back on the Snake pass to the car.Dazingdale18/04/2014
After a cracking stroll up Bleaklow to the wreckage of Overexposed, Sean and I came down to and then up from Grains in the Water. Gorgeous if windy day, and not too bad underfoot (for the Dark Peak)DanHolme29/12/2013
Started at Fairholmes. Circular route. Great weather.dromeas09/06/2013
After visiting Higher Shelf Stones. Via Hern Clough and Grains in the Water, good going thanks to narrow track along side of gill. Then short steep ascent to summit area and 400m of very gentle gradient. Summit of grass, moss, low heathery hags. Return W meant drop into gill, steeply out the other side and over the hill back to Pennine Way: easier than expected.Aye Jimmy16/05/2013
Up Alport valley.PeteF08/09/2012
parked on snake pass walked up hot dayeddy13/05/2012
Parked on the small hard standing area at Doctor's gate Culvert. Took in Higher shelf stones then walked due east from Pennine Way. Surprisingly, for March, the ground was dry so the walk was quicker than expected. Took a direct line back to the valley and was glad to reach the car! I believe that this moor was on the original line of the PW before being diverted.moorsman20/03/2012
Alport Castles from Ladybower Reservoir. First walk on my own!PhilHirst19/03/2012
Nice walk up from the A57. Followed the penine way for a mile then cut East and across the stream. Beautiful day for March. Many people about. The Team11/03/2012
