3.27 pm. Path from Monsal Head after a lapsang cuppa in the cafe..vegibagger25/09/2023
From Monsal Head (free parking on road opposite hotel). Up the ROW, then along N side of wall: this is getting overgrown. From 90 degree corner, crossed easily into field and along field boundaries to summit post. Crossed wall to cairn. Returned to corner, crossed into field and followed S side of wall back to ROW, over 2 gates.PGCE07/09/2023
With E. From Monsall Head with small car park behind you go through gap in wall and immediately turn left along footpath signposted Ashford. After 20m path splits. Take left path signposted Ashford, slightly uphill. For the next 50m the path is very narrow and falls away steeply to your right. It then widens out. After 550m you come to a bench and the footpath turns left. Continue along this left footpath passing 3 fields on your right until reaching a small wooden gate which you go through. Turn right and up field aiming for gate in top left hand corner. Continue uphill to another gate again in top left hand corner. Through gate and continue uphill to summit marked by a wooden post close to wall with barbed wire. This route avoids need to climb any walls or barbed wire fences and gates are all accessible.Beeliner07/08/2023
Quick up and down from Monsal Head Car Park. No one about at the end of the day and the sun finally came out.Lazylizzie15/04/2023
Parked on Mires Lane. Cresbrook Dale, Wardlow Hay Cop, Fin Cop. Out and back with R+R.Dan Baddeley19/03/2023
Not to be missed. Up as described by Neil Haslewood, and in Barry Smith's 75 summits book. The corner/ nose near the end of the route was the best viewpoint and was on short turf- an lovely new aspect of the familiar Monsal Dale for us. This was also the only bbw-free way (short fence btw walls) to enter the fields for a wall/fence free way to the Ashford path- useful to avoid descending the slippy path on the edge of the gorge.pwheeler17/03/2023
From Monsal Head CP. A February Monday seemed preferable to a summer Saturday/Sunday.summitsup20/02/2023
From Topley pike lay by on the A6, a nineteen and half mile walk to reach four Ethel’s Chelmorton Low, Sough top (Taddington moor), Bole hill and Fin Cop returning via the Monsal trail.WAYNE ROWLETT12/02/2023

With Mary and Nell. Followed Neil Haslewood's route description. The path from the finger post pointing to Ashford is not marked on the maps. The paths that run up from Hobs House are non starters.Glenelg21/05/2022
Up to Monsal Head from the viaduct, then followed Neil Haslewood's route description to the letter. Thanks Neil. Both sides of the wall have a claim for high point.summitter18/05/2022
Approached from Ashford via Pennyunk Lane ROW then diversion W across sheep pasture to summit. No problem with field boundaries as DSW gaps in many places. Interesting ancient earthworks around summit. With Felix and Miles!RoguePulsar02/05/2022

Started at Chelmorton on a very warm day, visited Five Wells then headed to Ashford-in-the-Water for coffee before the very hot plod up Pennyunk Lane. Followed the footpath as far as the northern edge of the escarpment, then took the very narrow path around the top of the edge. After a pleasant visit to the fort and summit, we stupidly decided to head south rather than retracing our steps. This led to a rather nightmarish steep and slipperly descent through low trees down to the river. After that a fine (but private, as it turns out) path led us along the river bank north. Eventually we regained access land, but then had a real job working out how to get off the access land to the footbridge over the river. Once we got that out of the way, it was easy and pleasant under the viaduct, before the last hot climb back up to Monsal Head just before the ice cream van closed for the day. A good trip, but I really wouldn't recommend descending southwards from the top.thesweetcheat07/09/2021
With Phil from Ashford in the Water via White Lodge and Monsall Head. Summit by wall on open access landclimbingkershaw15/06/2021
Great to be on the top on a sunny Dec day after a fast run up from Ashford. Down the sleep slope to N and bridge and trod directly up onwards High Field.davechaffey19/12/2020

From Monsal Head on public footpath then superb 'secret' path all the way to summit. Walk of the day.Wycombe Wanderer04/10/2020
Birthday walk on path from Monsal dale carpark (P&D but free on road) in hot sun. Great variety of wild flowers. HP at wall.Denise 27/05/2020
From Monsal Head on path along rim of valley. Great views, hot sunshine and profusion of wild flowers. Neat limestone wall crosses summit. Ground by post on E side slightly higher than ground by small cairns on W side but both appear to be on grassed over remnants of old walls.RichardM27/05/2020

18k walk from Litton. Abandoned attempt to find Hobs Cave as it was already 9pm when we were in the woods beneath Fin Cop. Did however stop at Monsal Head for a quick pint.John Eley28/06/2019
From the car park in Monsal valley floor, up to Monsal Head then onto Fin Cop. Returned via the same route, stopping for a pint at the pub. With Rosie.BobHancock17/04/2019
Parked at the top end of the Monsel car park, went through the gate to the over-spill car park field and nipped over the gate in the right hand corner to join the Ashford footpath. Then as moorsman. The car park is £1.30/hr and even I can get there and back within the allotted time.DC11main08/07/2018
Cool and sunny walk after parking at Monsal Head car park. Then used footpath from the front of the pub taking left fork. Left footpath to follow wall and path to bag the westerly cairns by the wall then over wall to gain summit. Stunning setting.Dugswell207/01/2018

Parked at Monsal Head. There is a large Pay and Display car park here but you can park for free on the roads nearby if you wish. Take the footpath to Ashford. Soon after leaving Monsal Head the path forks to the left. Do not take the right fork in the path as this will take you steeply down into the dale. Follow path through woods to a junction in the path. There is a finger post pointing to Ashford but ignore this and walk straight ahead through more woods. The path follows a wall on the left and is narrow at times with hillside falling away steeply down into the dale on the right. It is easy walking though. Follow the wall all the way to the top where it bends around a corner. Keep following the wall all the way to the summit. The top is next to the wall. Great views from the top and on the ascent and descent of the walk.Neil Haslewood20/07/2017
Same as moorsman.David Evans15/05/2017
From Monsal Head, headed down to have a look around Hob's House and then continued W to the prow of the hill from where a track in the grass led up to the summit. Returned via the concession path which leads back on the N side of the wall all the way to the RoW.Wheelsy02/04/2017
No need for any gate jumping or fence climbing as there is a good path all the way to the summit, Head along the Ashford path from the Monsal Head car park. When it veers inland there is a concessionary path carrying straight on along the top of the valley all the way to the summit. 1.9 miles 50 minutes. Minimal ascentmoorsman21/01/2017
From Monsal Head car park. Fp is round the front of the pub. After fp goes through gate, leap the field gate and make way to summit. Gates helpful although the summit cairn is a few feet over the other side of wall.Campbell Singer14/12/2016
From Monsall Head, following permissive path branching off from the main FP down to Ashford ITW.MrChris198008/10/2016
First of 3 Derbyshire tumps on 9 mile Sunday afternoon tramp from Monsal with Owen. Take path to Ashford then side path to right rather than lower path then having to scale extremely steep woods like we did.Mark Sims14/02/2016
Easy ascent through gates in fields from footpath to the east during a 20km 4 top walk with L from / to Ashford on a hot July day. Site of an iron age hill fort located on the crest of a steep sided bluff above the deeply incised valley of Monsal Dale. The site commands panoramic views in all directions and the other Peak District hillforts at Ball Cross, Burr Tor and Mam Tor are visible from the site. This would have allowed for rapid communication between these sites. Excavations, including by children from local schools .revealed 9 skeletons (so far)- all women or children -who appear to have been killed and thrown into a ditch.Chris Pearson11/07/2015
With G. From Ashford in the Water up Pennyunk Lane then B line to top. Then N and E beside wall picking up path above slopes with great views of viaduct. Some brambles etc. before rejoining main path to Monsal Head. Continued on Monsal trail then over to High Dale & Brushfield down to car park at Lees Bottom then back to Ashford via path through Shacklow Wood & beside River Wye.RT197006/07/2015
As for simon and co.arranc08/04/2015
From Monsal carpark next to pub. Good track at first then bramble bashing when track veered off L to Ashford. Several cairns over the wall at summit. With recent reports, expected this to be a frenzy of archaeological activity; apart from a couple of possible delvings and a lengthy ancient groove/banking nothing was seen. Was this the wrong part of the hill?Aye Jimmy22/09/2014
Having caught the Transpeak bus from Derby I alighted at Ashford-in-the-water and took fp that goes diagonally across the field and where it reaches the dry stone wall track I veered off and took the 'unofficial' track alongside the wall boundary (sw at first and then Nw) to skirt the Southern boundary where the ground drops away steeply. At the 275 metre mark I veered North west to go past the old Iron age embankment and followed the wall North to the summit. There are a few areas with stones presumably indicating where people think the summit is, I continued North and followed the Access path back to where it meets the public track and I followed 'Pennyunk lane' back to Ashford, Continuing on to Bakewell and then Lees Moor, ending at Rowsley. Today the Hawthorn berries were out and there were fantastic views of Deepdale and The Headstone viaduct.Dazingdale08/09/2014
Car park Monsal Head. Followed signed paths immediately N of pub. Later path not so good but OK - fair few brambles. No access problems for summit.destaylor27/02/2014
Ascent with Gabby from Monsal Head. Up through 4th field to Fin Cop Settlement then through gap in wall to north (Fin Wood) to access open land and summit on far side of wall to west. Stile on footpath trough Fin Wood will not let large dogs through/over so returned on field side of wall to public footpath.pwhitaker_196625/02/2014
From NE, Monsal Head, park in village earlyish, gates thru pastureRHW17/03/2013
Up from Monsal car park. The top is straight up through the fourth field on the right hand side (through two gates on the way up). With Cabe, first of the year.simon and co01/01/2013
From Monsal Head Hotel along path to RHS of stone walls. Summit seems clear, but built a small cairn from scattered rocks (not from the stone wall!) where I thought it was. Great view of the viaduct on the way that 99%+ of tourists never seeHillsidenick31/10/2012
