Parked near cattle grid to the west and followed edge of access land to summit ridge. Then went onto In Scarmatty1971b09/03/2024
No need to climb any walls. Follow the wall to a large gate, go through, after about 40m your in an open field. You should be able to see a path to the left. Or you can go round on the track. Which isn't marked in my map.BaggerBell18/02/2024
After Knipescar Common. Visited summit and Ben Rinnes's suggested highpoint.PGCE01/09/2023
The HB website has the high point in the pasture as one walks toward the middle copse of trees. However a local lady dog walker was insistent that the high point is actually on the edge of the copse which is furthest right. There is a tiny contour circle on OS map where she said, so I checked it out. The elevation app on my mobile phone ( not 100% accurate) recorded it as being the same height as HB, so perhaps both need to be accurately measured ( and fellow baggers should visit both, as I did). The lady also told me that the three blocks of trees are known in local folklore as Three Squadron of Horse. An invading force of Scots reached Penrith, mistook the trees for squadrons of English cavalry and beat a hasty retreat.Ben Rinnes24/06/2023
Nice walk from the layby on the A6 to the east.Alan Caine02/01/2023
Bus dropped me at start of FP to east. Super short walk. Then onto Knipescar and back to catch return bus in Shap via quiet roadstrimarc220/09/2022
From Knipescar common, over high wall at slightly lower point W of (now non-existent) gap, working round to track alog N side of Inscar Plantation, up line to summit, then an easy walk SE along N side of plantation and back to Scarside, parking at widening at bend just SE of 259 spot heighthenryfm07/08/2022
Parked near Shapbeck Gate then used bridleway around quarry towards In Scar then back east to bridleway and down to gate through dry stone wall then onward to Knipescar Common plus the concrete ring at the lower Birkett summit.Dugswell213/01/2022

Walked up from the Bridleway to the south East round the edge of quarry and then picked up quad bike track (today used by the Lowther Run event) to very close to summit. Thought we would have the hill to ourselves but about 300 runners out. Nice to see them all on this half marathon.nickywood115/08/2021

Easy walk across pasture from wall/plantation corner at 5395 1875SteveG15/07/2020
From fonebox in Bampton Grange. Left bridleway at NY 53959 18739 and through field to top. The wall west of In Scar has been repaired. It is easy to go back to the bridleway before going to Knipescar Common and so not damaging the wall.Alan Moore11/07/2020
Nice circular walk from Askham following the east bank of the river lowther to Whale where we followed the road around to a track passing barns and a couple of farm houses to the end of the track where you carry on in between two small plantations to easily reach the top. From here keep going to the end of the wall on the right where there is a clearing and a gate. We went through the gate turned right to Knipescar. Cracking concrete ring at the top. From here we carried on to the farm and the road back to Whale where we turned left on a path to a bridge over to the west bank of the lowther which we followed to the road back to AskhamWayne Mac10/07/2020
Followed footpath up to Low Scarside and on through gate to the summit. Some care is needed with the path on ascent as it is not well marked and the crossing points of the walls, which need to be crossed, is not always obvious.JohnW24/11/2019
In Scar, Knipescar Common, Heughscar Hillkeithouk13/10/2019
The gate to the SE gives access to the pasture E of the plantation. A marauding pack of bullocks guarded the top field but fortunately my wife was able to distract them (from the safety of the other side of the fence) long enough for a quick bag. Not nice.milimana04/10/2019
From A6 via bridleway round much expanded quarry.Waymarks similar to bridleway signs on gate near summit at about 536 191PeteN01/10/2019
Was going to park at Scarside Farm but the owner was driving down and asked me to park on the road which I did. An easy 1.75 mile round trip from there.Jim.Fothergill27/02/2019
Solo. It's a lot easier than it looks on the map. There's a gap in the plantation. Nip over the wall here from Knipescar Common. Over the fence by a wooden section in the corner then across field to high point.Dangerous Dave27/05/2018
From the west parking at cattle grid and via Knipe Scar. No longer a gap between the plantations or in wall so went to the south east end of Inscar plantation, and followed a rerouted bridleway (different to that shown on current OS map) through two gates almost to In Scar summitFisky Boy19/05/2018

If heading here after Knipescar, bear in mind that the clearing between the two sections of trees has now been planted and the wall is unclimbable. However, at the moment (November 17) there is a collapsed section 100m further along from the start of the second plantation. This gives easy access into the wood and subsequently the summit. Glad I went before the Lowrher Estate discovered this as it will almost certainly be rebuilt.moorsman28/10/2017
From start of RoW (NY 5299 1828), just room for a car. Went round E end of Inscar Plantation. On to Knipescar Common. Ground 160m N at NY 53578 19234 seemed as high, if not higher.jonglew26/09/2017
Through the gate from the WObardolph25/07/2017
Parked down at A6 again, and w Bryher and Jenx went up track, around edge of mature rape and then BW past old limekiln. These fields overgrown and thistly, possible signs of quarry expansion. After In Scar went through woods and gap in wall to Wainwright top. Jen down to Bampton w dog while I returned to car and round to collect them from river bridge.nordicstar13/07/2017
On the way to Knipe Scar from A6.jenx13/07/2017
a pain in the arse to get to from knipescar wall repaired had to go over a 6ft wall with barbed wire and a fence also with barbed wire and back again used a tree to help me. solo walkcolinfielding30/12/2016
In Scar from NY 53520 18091ronaldo33308/10/2016
From Knipe Scar. Looked up the summit photo on this site and located the boulder in near darkness without too much trouble. Headed back NW, between the copses and strode across the grassland, followed the strip plantations north then west to the bridleway and back to the car at 10pm. Good end to a good day.Wycombe Wanderer24/08/2016
From Knipe Scar SE there is a break in the wall which gives access into the plantation. The north edge of the wood is skirted before a walk through the fields to the top. With GB.bolton21/07/2016
Parked by cattle grid at 522187 - Track & then obvious path through bracken to Knipescar Common - ESE to the section of wall that has collapsed at 533189 - Crossed wall, through gate & across to summit. (PM)gerrybowes21/07/2016

Parked down on A6 and followed lane up the hill. Skirt around woods then up BW to near fell top. Several possible high points on a broad top.nordicstar27/03/2015

On way to Knipescar Common. Obvious boulder in open grassy area is the OS point, but 150m or so away is a copse with stile, which looks higher.Aye Jimmy29/01/2014

With Jo, circular walk Bampton Grange: road to Scarside, In Scar (using signed path), returning to gate, Knipe Scar, descending to road for return. Weather; sunny, mild, very good visibility.amblerbob09/01/2013
Verge of road beside Scar Side Farm at NY 53705 18287. Follow bridleway and although not shown on the map there is an inviting, way-pointed, wide grassy track that leads round the corner of the plantation where it then turns sharp left to run parallel with the trees. The track runs about 80 metres north of the plantation wall to another gate from where it is just a short distance to the summit of In Scar.David Gradwell11/11/2007
