Bagged as YSM0045 Farley Mount. Pretty straightforward walk to this, lovely monument. Monument has the inscription: Underneath lies buried a horse, the property of Paulet St. John Esq., that in the month of September 1733 leaped into a chalk pit twenty-five feet deep afoxhuntiing with his master on his back and in October 1734 he won the Hunters Plate on Worthy Downs and was rode by his owner and was entered in the name of Beware Chalk Pit.[1] #8 day#3 Total day#2 #11 Total day#1 #13thejackrustles20/08/2017
A local landmark folly to 'Beware Chalk Pit' -a horse buried beneath, which so the story goes survived a 25 ft fall with its owner on its back into a chalk pit whilst foxhunting and went on to win races. Even odder was a PG Tips tea card (1990s) depicting a chimp riding a horse past the folly. No horses (or chimps) seen on my visit - but it was dark at 6.00pm.Chris Pearson05/12/2016
Short walk along the byway from the carpark to the E. Not views thanks to the low cloud & rain.DanMaisieBex21/05/2016
