Ascent from A4212 car park by Llyn Celyn, past farm buildings then striking up across the heather moors. Vague paths (or sheep trods?) before following the fence to the summit. Return by same routeCumbriancyclist07/09/2023

Was planning on climbing a few today but the amount of rain and I' guessing the thaw water from recent slow made the rivers unpassable. I got up Arenig Fach ok and planned on going over to Carnedd y Filisat but Afon Gelyin was unpassible. I walked upstream for about 2 miles to get around it. The ground was a complete bog, litterally knee deep for miles. Don't try this route after rain. I ended up having to wade waste deep across Nant Goch at the end, well dodgy but I had to get over.davert12328/12/2022
October 2022 – Glorious views, but unforgiving in nature. Used the CP (with facilities) at 846403. Followed the route to the left as previously mentioned, towards the derelict cottage. Picked a route of sorts to the midway point where I found bog with an impassable stream – go WSW around this! Made my way through masses of heather for sight of Llyn AF with view of attending cliffs. Then followed the fenceline above LAF. Steeper but a decent path at last. The summit is barren but rather hospitable in comparison. The shelter by TP was well received seeing as it was blowing a gale! Again, lovely views. If you can put up with the lack of any decent path then this hill is very worthwhile, though you won’t think that at times. Purely by happenchance came down by a more easterly route which was rather better, although I’m not sure it was within CROW (suggest you check)Swifty Morgan17/10/2022
Arenig Fach - The Easy Way Parked in the car park with the toilets 845403. Over the road and through the gate straight opposite up the track which meets the public right of way. Go through a gate then there is a field with a derelict building on the left. 2 gates - (and as the friendly farmer we met said to us) go through the lower gate, cross a stream (between 2 nice little water falls) and follow the track all the way across a ridge to a fence with a stile, the last little bit was through heather with some bits of ATV track but the stile was perfectly visible from a distance. Over the stile and follow the path up the fence all the way onto the ridge until it meets another stile. At that point head directly to the trig. 2.1 miles 1hr 15mins to the top. To descend reversed the route. 4.2 miles back in under 2hrs 40 with a longish break at the summit.JulieB06/10/2022

Tough one to finish off, the hike up was tough on the legs after struggling to find a path leading upto the lake. great views from the top with an ankle breaking descent down and again struggling to find a path.Buckleymon14/07/2022

Out and Back from lay-by to the SE where a slither of open access land touches the road. Managed to stay on pretty good ‘path’ throughout. With R.Dan Baddeley23/01/2022
Took longer than I expected, a real slog up through heather from the permissive path. Descednt line following the fence line further east much bettr and took me straight back to the same layby a little to the east of start point.dickscroop10/01/2022

From a layby on the A4212 next to Llyn Celyn: Foel-boeth, Waun Garnedd-y-Filiast, Carnedd y Filiast, Carnedd llechwedd-Llfyn and Arnig Fach. Never again- this is one for hardened holl-baggers only. Miles and miles of stumbling through pathless heather.Lazylizzie30/08/2021

After visiting Manod Mawr I walked up from gate by the A4212. A hard walk for me took over 90 mins with a comfort break half way. Heavy underfoot with heather once out of view of the road - walk not enjoyed but SOTA VHF activation was. Glad to get back down and head off to Mynydd Nodol in the car.G4OBK (Phil)25/04/2021

My 33.33333 Marilyn. Parked near memorial chapel, 5mins N along road round head of bay and up. Weak sunshine and strong wind. Warmed in afternoon. On to Carnedd y F after. Rounsfell17/09/2020

Summit was worth 40 points on the 2020 Marmot Dark Mountains - arrived here at 3am. Bogs, tussocks, heather everywhere!Geoff Briggs26/01/2020
From carpark end of Llangwm Celyn. As others up the track past house to top dwelling. Lower gate over stream at waterfalls, then good track up the grass to the flatter part. After which pick up sketchy path along the fence, hard work over heather and rocks. 2/3 ...scratching head why this is a Trail 100N.Morters23/12/2019
Walked in sunshine with Rebekah and Delilah. Great views from the top!simonjallen23/10/2019
From north end of lyn straight up steep fence line then path disappeared and a real struggle from there on. Does this mountain have no paths ? And why is this the Trail 100 and not Arenig Fawr?Mark Sims07/07/2019

A Marilyn day on the Arenigs, visiting Moel Lechwedd, Arenig Fawr, Arenig Fawr South Top, Arenig Fawr South Ridge Top, Moel Llyfnant, before going on to climb Arenig Fach and then Mynydd Nodal. Over 20km in 7h30m. (S)silveracorn_alan24/09/2018
From lay-bye on A 4212 to the south. Through gate and short track then across a couple of fields to reach fenceline that was followed almost to summit. Rain for much of the walk. Poor underfoot with heather and wet cobbles. With Val for first half of route then solo to summit.mike.hoult08/08/2018

From parking area on road SE of hill. Track up past dwellings to pen, then across stream onto grassy track up onto and along Bryn Du, then over a stile and alongside a fence as far as its first dip, then left up through some not too gruesome heather, above which animal tracks lead towards the summit.Topographer5710/05/2018
A lovely easy walk at the start, along the track from the big car park on Llyn Celyn past Craig-y-ronw and Fridd Uchaf. A good grassy ATV track leads up to Bryn Du (nice views) and along to the fence below Arenig Fach. After that, it's a steep and gruesome walk up the fence on a sort of path through deep heather, and then a lovely summit with superb views. There's a vague path down sticking more to the high ground above the fence, which is better until back close to the fence, although it comes and goes a bit.Gill19/04/2018
Llyn Celyn through forest to footpath via Nant-y-Coed to Waun Garnedd-y-Filiast to Carnedd y Filiast to Carnedd Llechwedd-llyfn to Arenig Fach. Descend via east ridge to Llyn Celyn. Clear weather, but cold and windy. Saw nobody all day. Walked solo. Once past Carnedd y Filiast, the route was mainly pathless and very rough going ... bogs and tussock grass! Arenig Fach a nice wild mountain with a fine corrie tarn, though the others were rather forgettable lumps!jamessteel10005/04/2018

CP at the junction of A4212/B4391, walk 200 metres to an access gate, it's not that bad but beware the boulder fields, lots of hidden gaps.bardolph27/09/2017
As part of Nuttall walk 6.2, with Penda. 6.5 hours, a punishing flog through deep heather up, and through bogs down. Great views from top however. Exhausting! Didn't appreciate the farmer who put barbed wire at the bottom of the fence I followed down, just the right place to snag my gaiters and scrape the dog. Idiot!beorwulf08/07/2017
From the A4212 lay-by near the Nant yr Helfa. A bruising little route through heather and whortleberry overlaying rocks, largely following the fence above Llyn Arenig Fach. Superb views onto that hidden lake and across southern Snowdonia compensated.Nick Down109/06/2017
Parked car at junction of B4391 and A4212 and took the lane and footpath to GR826400. Took the signposted 'Tir gofal' route but it's quite difficult to follow, especially once you're through the wall and into the heather/billberry. Very windy on top. Took the fence South East, also slow going until you turn East and follow the old fence posts. Took the footpath/lane back to the car.tsharp06/06/2017
Took Karen to do this nuttall the last for us in the Arenigs. we parked in the layby at top end of lake and went past the farm for 300m before taking a compass bearing to the llyn. taking the south route we headed for the fence in low clag freezing mist. we hit the fence and followed the fence like above the crag and made way to both the cairn and trig point. no views. we returned the same wayAristotle Chip23/11/2016
444th (soon to be 445th) final English & Welsh Nuttall. Joined by 12 other friends/family and hill bagging buddies in strong NE winds, cloud and the first snow of the year. Thank you everyone for taking the trouble and time to enjoy chocolate biscuit cake on the summit, then whiskey and cake in the car park in what where less than ideal conditions.mntainman06/11/2016
Steve Smith's 445th and final Nuttall. thirteen of us braving the slush laden north wind. Not nice place too be for a November Sunday lunchtime. but good company, quick celebration and drinks and cake kept till back in the calm at the cars in the lay by.vegibagger06/11/2016

On Steve Smith's Nuttall completion party. From parking area W side Llyn Celyn. High winds with much sleety snow.jonglew06/11/2016
My first Nuttall and Steve Smith's final one! A great experience to join Steve on his 444th and final nuttall. I hope you had better weather for the other 443! The route was tricky as we had to negotiate a tricky pathway following a fence. There were vey strong winds and snow/hale, so much so that we had to celebrate Steve's mile stone at ground level. A very memorable and enjoyable day which will be remembered for a long time.Simon110006/11/2016
Nuttall completion on one of the toughest hills in North Wales, in November? Yep, it certainly lived up to it's billing. It wasn't until I'd sat right by my wood burner for half an hour back home in Rhos that I finally started to warm up again.Twice Shy06/11/2016
I can gauge how frequented a hill is by how terrified the sheep are. On Arenig Fawr earlier, they reluctantly stopped eating for a few seconds as I passed; here they fled when I was 200 yards away. From road junction to south. Toiled straight up through deep, energy sapping heather in the heat. The terrain would give most of Scotland a run for its money. Found a path on descent that terminated abruptly near y Foel and had an even longer hack back. 1 hour 45 mins.Wycombe Wanderer15/09/2016
