From CP on Criggion lane, Breidden Hill - Moel y Golfa - Middletown Hill. 10.6 Mile loop with R+R. | Dan Baddeley | 23/03/2024 |
Walked west from Middletown Hill, over minor summit (307m), then south from col. Took Private Path above The Dingle to join the public fp up through the trees to the summit. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 25/02/2024 |
Ascent from Middletown via Moel y Golfa woods, though footpaths from the village were unclear on the ground. Spectacular views of distant Welsh massifs from the summit. Descent to Golfa Bank and back via footpath alongside A458 | Cumbriancyclist | 18/01/2024 |
Parked at N 52° 42.325 W 003° 03.525 (Shepards Lane Parking). From here there is a straightforward and scenic path to the summit (a few rocky bits), where myself and Alma Aurea enjoyed the glorious views. /D | meltdiceburg | 15/09/2023 |
Stayed overnight in the Admiral Rodney pub CP (no charge, just buy a meal or some drinks). Up an adjacent track and ROW to Kempster's Hill, the final 100m or so being a clamber up a woodland bank. E to a gate and minor road, which led westwards past Bulthy and Belle Eisle Farm. Opposite the farm building is a ROW running between Bulthy Hill and Middletown Hill, turning westwards to the top of the latter. Onwards to Moel y Golfa, taking a route around a house along a footpath signed No Footpath! until reaching the official woodland path above The Dingle. A touch brackeny in places but a superb summit with a fascinating memorial to the Romany grandfather of Tyson Fury. Descended SW along a craggy path until eventually reaching a minor road heading back NE towards New Pieces. Just before the high point of the road ... 264m there is a ROW track up to and behind a barn conversion, from where it joins another ROW past pheasant pens to SW of the summit. A grass cut path helps gain a few more | summitter | 01/09/2023 |
Parked at the pub, still for sale. Walked back west to the house and farm, up lane, into row which crosses the field. Over stile, straight up for 50m to path, which takes you to the summit, albeit hidden by 5foot bracken at times. Very impressive monument, how did they move such large bolcks of stone (or get them there?). Well worth the visit. | iangalbraith | 14/08/2023 |
Parked by Breiddon Inn, now up for sale. Busy main road, but path behind hedge has gap in hedge opposite footpath. Route as Julie B. Steep parts on the descent were rather tricky with our elderly lab. | kindpercy | 28/07/2023 |
With Martin Kimberley. Same as JulieB except for the return path, where we followed the road to the North and came on the path between the hills (very overgrown). Well marked tracks were over grown, and poorly marked tracks on the West side were very steep, but perhaps best to use these for ascent and descent. | gbeniston | 19/07/2023 |
08:00, 3 degrees (8 later), north-easterlies, sunny spells. Grit bin and SW ridge route. Superb example of the inselbergs of this area; wooded lower slopes, rocky ridge, sense of spaciousness. Love it! | Wycombe Wanderer | 26/02/2023 |
Same route as JulieB. | mad max | 12/02/2023 |
Second ascent. Parked at 28561250 with space for at least two cars. Up track in open access land (not shown on OS map) which takes you past Trinity Well and up to ridge. Additional parking space for one car at 28551230. | PeteF | 30/12/2022 |
Up from the grit box like others. It was very steep with a little scramble at the end. Enjoyed it but a bit damp. | nickywood1 | 20/12/2022 |
From car park by the Breiddon Inn on main road in Middletown. Along path on same side of road for a short way then across road to The Dingle. Followed zig zag path that goes initially across field and then up steeply through woods. Yellow markers randomly placed. Across ridge path to monument. From summit continued west along ridge path (steep in parts) down to countouring path past base of quarry. Then back along lower path to start. 3.1 miles 1hr 28 walking time (per Garmin) | JulieB | 19/10/2022 |

From pub car park in Middletown, had planned to link with Middletown Hill, but not that easy. Followed zig zag path that goes initially across field and then up through woods. Good view point going to both tops and monument. | PeterD | 09/08/2022 |
From the grit bin on Garreg Drive, up south west ridge with my missus, traversed peak then followed path steeply down east to The Dingle, saw deer. Return via contour path past quarry. Hot day but 80% of route shaded by trees. Fine peak and monument. | Nick Canute | 08/08/2022 |
Parked at Breiddon pub, then up some very steep wooded paths, roe deer disturbed on wayup. | cjo | 28/05/2022 |
From Welshpool on bike which I left at base of hill. | davechaffey | 26/05/2022 |
CP at Briedden pub in Middletown then ROW to summit. Steep through the woods, but well worth it for great views to the N and W. Late spring snow shower on the descent. With Carla and Felix. | RoguePulsar | 02/04/2022 |
Walked from a pub on the road onto a path, we crossed the road to a driveway which had a field on the left which we went into, we followed a path into the wood the path in the wood was very steep, near the top was a big rock monument. Went with Dad and Mum. | speedyclimber | 02/04/2022 |
Parked in old quarry, walked through woods generally upwards until reached path to the top. Followed the row down close to Trinity well. Only saw one other Walker. Solo. | Pjb100 | 17/03/2022 |
Parked above Garreg Bank at 2854 1237 and followed the obvious track up. It becomes a footpath higher up which leads all the way to the impressive Romany monument and also the summit. Lovely woodland walk with superb views too. | Peterb | 04/11/2021 |
Parked by the gate to the south then followed path west before looping back up. | Stevooo | 20/08/2021 |
easy park sj2854 1236 room for 4-5 cars up track then feint steep path aimed for trinity well (no sign of well on ground' up to ridge path small scramble on near top then monument and 3 tops return same route 1 hour 2ks 207m ascent hill of the day | underhill | 23/06/2021 |
Thought I would pop up here while passing through the area. Massively underestimated how steep this was and how long it would take. | sturuss | 14/04/2021 |
Middletown - Middletown Hill - Breidden Hill - New Pieces - Moel y Golfa - Long Mountain North Top - Long Mountain - Welshpool. | Mark Jackson | 26/09/2020 |
From grit bin at drive entrance on Garreg Bank, reasonable path up with a couple of easy scrambles. Down through woods and across field following footpath signs back to the main road. | prwild | 26/08/2020 |
Parked at pub to SE and followed path through field. Sunny, a shower on top, amazing light. ?Gypsy? memorial impressive. Detour en route Wilms-Ldn. | Rounsfell | 12/01/2020 |
Not the easiest route to find. We parked on the minor road near the forestry plantations on the NW side of the hill. Followed lane to Bryn then the public footpath that takes you down! towards the Dingle. Then lots of signs saying PRIVATE NO FOOTPATH. Unfortunately the public paths on this side of the hill start on the busy A458. Kindly the gentleman (and his daughter) at the Dingle agreed we could cross their private land to reach the public footpath. From there it was up through the woods to the Gypsy Memorial at the summit. A great hill for views we have picked out Meol -Y - Golfa from the Pennines before now. We descend down the steeper SW face coming out on the minor road. | briandavies | 17/10/2019 |
From the grit bin to the SW. Wet paths and greasy rock near the top, due to heavy rain previously. Quite a good view from the top. | NormanW | 01/10/2019 |
Drove up road through Middletown to parking area at start of private road towards The Dingle. Followed this to No Footpath sign, augmented by dogs barking and stern-looking man. GOML. retreated to ROW, a vertiginous footpath., to next path towards target - more No Footpath signs.... But no dogs. Got onto ROW through The Dingle; continued W where it turns NE, direct to summit. On return, followed ROWs down to A458 and returned up road, losing advantage of driving up hill!! There seems to be a path across fields from Mount Pleasant to woods, saving A-road walk | henryfm | 16/09/2019 |
Fine circular walk on the way back from Wales. Just possible to park a single car at SJ 2896 1195. Good paths through the woods, almost a scramble to the top - exceptional views W. | DanMaisieBex | 04/08/2019 |
Scrambled up through trees until we found the path and continued up the slope which although heavy rain fortunately had not yet turned into a quagmire. View from top worth the effort and interesting monument which is approximately 25 tons and was taken up in a lorry! Took more gentle route down and came out in nearby field. | elizyanne | 30/07/2019 |
Parked in pull in at SJ285123. Up Forest tracks to SW end of hill then up along the ridge to summit and down NE Side. Followed a very unused but pleasant track looping back to the forest road. Lovely little hill. | Jephcote83 | 14/04/2019 |
From Middletown, up the track round to Bryn, then just after cut over fields to ridge and summit. | N.Morters | 05/04/2019 |
Sunny February day walking all the Breiddens.
Walked up the eastern path from Middletown village. This path is pretty much all through woodland and is well marked. The mud path is very steep on the lower sections though and I would imagine could be quite tricky after rainfall.
The views on the top are spectacular with only a small eastern section obscured by trees. There is a monument on the top and you can see across to Rodney's Pillar, Middletown and Welshpool.
Walked down the western path. This path is not as well marked as the eastern path and is easy to stray off. A lot more trickier as the path has some very steep muddy banks and small rock faces en route.
Spoke to a local gentlemen who said he doesn't see as many people up this hill, compared to Rodney's Pillar. Well worth the effort to go up but might be a bit tricky for some people due to the steep paths, and I wouldn't recommend doing it after heavy rainfall. | brandybordeaux | 25/02/2019 |
Circuit of the Breidden Hills with Lidsey. Parked near Criggion at grid ref SJ 2944 1491. Route was forest tracks to Breidden Hill (Rodney's Column). South to New Pieces (summit in trees, bracken and brambles). South through woods to road then to small car park at at eastern foot of Middletown, SJ 2969 1305. Walked up to Moel Y Golfa summit and back down by same route. Then up Middletown Hill, over summit and down to col below Bulthy Hill. Footpath down to Belle Eisle Farm, very muddy track then bridleway and forestry roads back to carpark. Cloudy-bright, dry, quite a stiff breeze. Distance 5.7 miles with 1,935 feet accumulated ascent. | Skip | 13/01/2019 |
9am ascent up from Middletown. Heavy fog in the valley giving a great inversion from the summit. Very steep up, but a good hill. | huwthomas | 24/12/2018 |
2/7 Marilyn day. The ascent of Moel y Golfa from the Shepherd's Cottage up through the woods. A round trip of 3km taking just under an hour. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 07/08/2018 |
P by grit bin @ SJ283120. Good path through woods - summit in open ground - a couple of little rock bands add interest to ascent. Nice hill. | ger | 29/04/2018 |
Parked at SJ297130. Gate 100m to west was padlocked. Spoke to a local paraglider who said it was a recognised footpath but unmarked. Pleased I had wellington boots for the first field. Good views of River Seven & oxbow lakes being formed. | rogreeves | 16/03/2018 |
frozen ground and very misty. worth another visit. | gettingonabit | 09/01/2018 |

With TJB, approached from Bryn where there is parking. | trimarc2 | 05/07/2017 |
Candidate for New Favourite Hill! Find it hard to locate public footpaths up from the West and South but eventually made sense of it. Was a dramatic ascent, with several false tops one of which was a fool on the Scramble for a minute, the ummit is so homely with its 3 Candidate tops and interesting monument. It was so still and warm, such a nice place to have lunch. Great views of the berwyns comma the arans and cadair IdrisWalked around the whole Breidden range today, a long time goal. It was a wonderful day would (in sandals) so much variety including Rocky ascent, grassland, Forest, beautiful Gorse fields and the gorgeous country lanes. I would say that it is hard to construct a logical route around the three main peaks and there is a mixture in the area of clearly marked paths and public access but also defensive slash aggressive signs warding away walkers. Superb views all day, still weather and warm April Sunshine, such a great day out. Solo. | tumpawumpa | 19/04/2017 |
From NE, P 297130 easy access to summit from gate at 295130. Impressive hill. | Topographer57 | 05/04/2017 |
Super hill. Took a direct southeast descent for a quick return to Middletown and spotted a few deer on the slope along the way. | Alex C | 10/03/2017 |
A lovely Christmas new year walk. Popular as featured in Times but Bernard and I were just finishing what we had intended a few days earlier. Lovely views | SarahS | 02/01/2017 |
Parked beside the Breidden Pub in Middletown for a three hill winter walk, this being the first. Impressive monument on the top and a fantastic view to the welsh mountains dusted in snow. | Bernard | 02/01/2017 |
1/8 First of eight (Moel y Golfa/Breiddon Hill/Long Mountain (Beacon Ring)/Caeliber Isaf/Shadwell Hill/Pen-Caenion/Ddifed/Mynydd Cerrigllwydion) | Fergalh | 18/12/2016 |
A nice route and summit views. | jenx | 02/10/2016 |
Repeat from the same spot as last time, to NE between Golfa and Middletown hill. Good lines up hill to fence and finger post on other side. Superb line up through mature beech trees in autumnal splendour to majestic views out from summit tops. Sweet memorial. Saw a lad on the land on return who said it wasn't a public path however directed us out the way we came cheerily | nordicstar | 02/10/2016 |
After Breidden Hill and New Pieces headed over Old Mills Hill and then down to the W of the hill, ascending via SW. Continued over top and ignored sharp right hand turn in path, finding a path that led down NE to Bryn. | Wheelsy | 26/08/2016 |
Number two of three summits on this walk. Cloud, sunshine and heavy showers. From Coedway using Braggington Lane to Middletown Hill (367m). Onto Moel y Golfa (403m) then through Breidden Forest to Breidden Hill / Rodney's Pillar (366m). Returning through Brimford Wood and Crewgreen. Distance = 21.45km. Average moving speed = 5.0km/h. Time moving = 4:17. Ascent = 722m. | paulnewby81 | 21/05/2016 |
I made a right mess of getting to this lovely summit. Parked at SJ 29709 13021 but then headed south and lost height and tried and failed to get onto the hill at the end of the track marked The Dingle. Back tracked and eventually got onto the hill to be rewarded with a great top and fine views. Came down the much more sensible route end ended up on the road near Bryn. | Father Ted | 03/04/2016 |
With Trefor. Very enjoyable walk up from west. A small easy scramble near top. Great views of the snow covered hills of North Wales. | mike.hoult | 11/03/2016 |
Approached from SW parking at jcn of Shepherd's Lane & Garret Bank one of only two available places, the other being entrance to Shepherds Hill cottage. Both spots limited and room for only one medium vehicle. Smashing hill with tight contours and one easy scramble on SW ascent. Smashing views all round in sight of English Welsh border summits to the east including Stiperstones, The Wrekin and Brown Clee Hill + Corndon Hill on the Welsh side of the border. To the west Cadair Idris, The Arans and The Berwins. | mntainman | 25/02/2016 |

The hill that's trying to be a mountain. Parked near grit bin 28351195 (one or two spaces) and took path (not track) uphill into woods. Second path on the left went through oak and beech woods to the rocky top with fine views. Descended to the sound of woodpeckers on this beautiful spring morning. | mindlessflogger | 21/03/2015 |
Started from car park in Middletown and walked up road opposite a short way before turning left onto a track then right at a sign post where a narrow path climbs steeply up to the ridge and a tarmac road. A short walk along the road to the second gate which gives access to a field and a grassy ridge through trees to the summit. We returned to the road then walked up Middletown Hill. Descended on a path which eventually contoured through trees back to car. Saw several monk jack deer. With SH and Pat. | wombourne | 22/12/2014 |

Parked at Criggion, couldn't find any of the field paths north so had to walk the very busy road over the R.Severn walked along the riverbank to a path from Pool Quay, no path signs on bridge across the river and along Watery Lane: the wettest lane from hell, finally got to the hills, with no footpaths signs we guessed our way over Moel Y Golfa, Middletown Hill and up to Rodneys Pillar and back to Criggion. They really need to spend money on footpaths and signs around here! 16.3 miles. | DanTrig | 13/11/2010 |
What a great hill. Frustrated by access from the quarry I tried a different approach from the layby on the west side, and with some scrambling achieved the memorial on the tops. There are mountains that are less work than this... | DanHolme | 10/04/2010 |
