Lovely walk along edge from Alphin Pike via Wemberry Stones and Stable Stones. Turned off path for final 200m over reasonably dry grass and heather to unmarked summit. Fairly flat summit so relied on GPS for location. | Amplifier | 20/08/2024 |
From Dovestones car park along Bradbury Lane, then footpath at Greave and good path all the way up the ridge. Then along the edge to Hoarstone Edge and the reservoir.Grand walk in sunny weather. With Bridget. | catman | 07/05/2024 |

From Alphin Pike, diverted off the main path to 'tick' the 'summit' then on to Chew Reservoir and N over Featherbed Moss and Ashway Moss. | steveb2006 | 17/11/2023 |
Couldn’t find a path so ascended across rough terrain to summit. Stable Stones Brow rocks have a much superior view north | Vulcan | 09/08/2023 |
From Dove Stone Reservoir car park, E. along road to junction with RoW, starting just before bridge over Chew Brook - Up RoW through Chew Piece Plantation, across the Oldham Way & then an enjoyable climb on good path up Rams Clough - Turned left & along escarpment path until just before the Chew Brook clough - E. & then S. to featureless top; fortunately, ground was dry. Back via Chew Reservoir. | gerrybowes | 18/05/2023 |
Parked at Dove Stone car park (£4 all day). Circuit of Ashway Moss, Featherbed Moss trig, Hoarstone Edge and Alphin Pike. 18km, 5 hours. | PGCE | 27/02/2023 |
With Lesley, skyline on to Wimberry Rocks then Alphin | Nick Canute | 05/02/2023 |
One of those hills where the top isn't as good as the path along the edge. Been along the edge path a few times but came over today to tick the high point. | Alan Moore | 11/11/2022 |
Reached from Dove stone reservoir car park £4 all day on a Twelve and half mile walk taking in the summits of Ashway moss, Featherbed moss, Black chew head, Hoarstone edge and Alphin pike. The ROW over the moor to Chew reservoir is hard to follow so probably best to follow the edge round to the reservoir. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 09/10/2022 |
Alphin Pike - Hoarstone Edge - Featherbed Moss - Black Chew Head. With R+R. | Dan Baddeley | 02/04/2022 |
3 of 3 from dovestones car park and straight after featherbed. No direct path from there so straight across rugged moorland up and down past river gorges cut into the landscape | The-Z-Man | 14/11/2021 |
23 miles 3487ft walk. Start at Crowden campsite, Pennine Way to Chew Reservoir, Hoarstone Edge, Alpine Pike, Broadstone Hill and Black Hill, back to Crowden campsite. | stephenbuda | 14/10/2021 |
round from crowden with Em | holtsd | 30/08/2021 |
From Black Chew Head following RoW past Black Chew Reservoir, continuing along northern rim of reservoir outfall with Chew Brook below as far as footpath up from Chew Brook NNE of summit. Turned left and south heading for summit area using GPS.Clue to type of terrain is not in it's name. A vast expanse of moorland covered in cotton grass, fortunately during a dry spell, would imagine it is usually very boogy. Views of Manchester skyline to the west. Returned to RoW on an easterly bearing, on to Pennine Way and back to Crowden Camping & Caravan Club Site. | mntainman | 23/07/2021 |
From Dovestones Reservoir, past Chew Reservoir towards Laddow Rocks then doubled back over Featherbed Moss, then over wimberry Moss to Hoarstone Edge and Alphin Pike. | Longwojo | 20/06/2021 |
Across the moor from Featherbed Moss. Almost entirely pathless. Dry conditions after a dry spell. One dodgy area about halfway over that could be difficult after a wet spell. N | Nick Caunt | 08/06/2021 |
From Tunstead Lane, Black Chew Head, Featherbed Moss and Hoarstone Edge. | rhalstead | 09/05/2021 |
From Dove Stone Reservoir | RWG | 05/05/2021 |

Mountain Hares and Snow Buntings seen enroute. | briandavies | 04/01/2021 |

From Featherbed Moss. Mainly dry underfoot, huge amount of cotton grass an attractive change from the norm. On to Alphin Pike. | Wycombe Wanderer | 09/06/2020 |
Black Chew Head, Featherbed Moss, Hoarstone Edge, Wild Bank Hill | keithouk | 19/01/2020 |
From Dove Stone Resr car park (a reasonable £1.30 all day). Tarmac road up to Chew Resr, good track along S side Chew Resr, thereafter a bit rubbish: Black Chew Head -> Featherbed Moss -> Hoarstone Edge -> Alphin Pike. Rough and trackless moorland. Steep descent back to car park from Alphin Pike. | jonglew | 04/12/2019 |
From Dovestones car park via Black Chew Head. Up from Chew reservoir, probably not going best route but going underfoot ok. Flattish top, but managed to find the 3 stones. Back down faint steep path to north initially following stream that got me back to Chew road without going back to reservoir. My penultimate English and Welsh Couty / UA top. | PeterD | 25/09/2019 |
Parked at Crowden SK072993 for Black Chew Head, Featherbed Moss and Hoarstone Edge. | David Evans | 02/09/2019 |
Part of a great walk from Dovestone Reservoir. Great views and interesting rock formations. Good paths throughout this walk. | flockwatcher | 16/02/2019 |
On own. Parked at Dove Stones Reservoir car park. 60 pence for 3 hours, £1.30 all day.
Chew Road > Chew Reservoir > Black Chew Head Oldham UA summit > Featherbed Moss trig point > Hoarstone Edge Tameside UA summit > Alphin Pike trig point > Dove Stones Reservoir car park.
Three small stones at summit but photo of one A Wilson (see earlier logs) no longer there. I think it must have been destroyed by the moorland fires earlier this summer. The heather has been completely burnt out by the fires and ground is blackened. | Beeliner | 24/10/2018 |
Been wanting to do this for a long time- made a day of it with lovely 11 miler from Binn Green - past the 3 reservoirs then up on to the edges via Birchin Clough - long way to England's highest reservoir- Chew - then surprisingly good path continuing along the edge. Detoured off through the burnt moor to reach the top then long walk down the access road after getting back to Chew dam. | Mark Sims | 08/10/2018 |
Me and the dog, from Dove Stone Reservoir car park, to Chew Reservoir, then the path which goes all along the edge, went near to Stable Stones Brow then cut into the heather to the highpoint Hoarstone Edge, needed the satnav to find the spot, can see a long way (skylines)but need to go to the edges for better views. | Walkingthedog | 08/06/2018 |
From Dove Stones CP. 60p for 3 hours. Rough path op the direct route following Rams Clough and out onto peaty moorland. Thankfully bone dry. The top gives a feeling of isolation and solitude. Beautiful surrounding area. | Campbell Singer | 31/05/2018 |
Crowden, Hoarstone Edge, Featherbed Moss, Black Chew Head, meteor crash site, Black Hill, White Low, Crowden. In snow flurries, frozen ground and thick cloud with Mart & Daisy. | John Eley | 22/01/2017 |
With Eire, Evan, Sail, Danu, Coel & Alfie. | Dangerous Dave | 15/10/2016 |
From wnw via Alphin Pike, breezy sunny pm, lovely views and a bit of running | RHW | 25/09/2016 |
From Dovestones cp £1.30 all day. Walked along the Edge to Alphin trig which gave great views across the valley. | mart0797 | 10/08/2016 |
From the car park at Dovestones reservoir. Walked up the Chew road to the dam and then along the the edge west to this indistinct top. 6.3 miles and about 2 and a half hours. Solo. | bolton | 18/04/2016 |
5/6 Fifth of another great day in peak district (Newcombe drive/Heaton park/Blackstone Edge/Wimberry Moss/Hoarstone Edge/Dead end Edge) | Fergalh | 20/03/2016 |
1st hill of 5 today from Mossley fp and track to reservoir and then over clough and up on a track eventually disappearing into the bog. Over Far Harehill clough on bearing to top.
As i wasnt sure i had veered off i climbed all seemingly high points that i could see so ended up exploring Stables stones brow and got a reading of 500m there! Also found myself walking up towards Alphin pike but stopped at the 474m point. Got reading of 495m for Hoarstone edge and did a lot of wandering around!! | Dazingdale | 08/02/2016 |
Completed as part of the Chew Valley horseshoe | hillexplorer | 03/11/2015 |
From Crowden over Featherbed Moss and Windgate Edge to Hoarstone Edge and back via Black Chew Head. Got lost but loved it! | mcallmar | 09/10/2015 |
With the Dove Stone reservoir car park full saved £1.30 by parking at Binn Green. After eventually finding the way out of the car park along the Oldham Way trudged up to Chew reservoir then along the path to stumble around in the heather to find the top. | Newton Maximus | 20/09/2015 |
Dove Stone Reservoir- Chew Reservoir- Hoarstone Edge-Winbery Stones- Alphin Pike- Dovestone Reservoir. | Lazylizzie | 29/08/2015 |
A good bit of hard rough uphill work. From Dovestones dam track then steeply alongside stream -thin path exists -to shortest line out onto moorland plateau to flat peat hag top. Surprisingly found small cairn and card announcing Tameside highpoint and photo of Wilson. Good test for fell shoe grip on same steep wet grass descent. 1hr 15mins round trip.Have passed close to this top as a teenager doing Sadleworth 5 trigs but probably followed edge path from Alphin Pike. Have also crisscrossed the moors once dong the New Chew score orienteering event | Chris Pearson | 06/08/2015 |
Parked at end of road by bridge to south at the start of the track. Followed track to 01497 99019 then took the narrow path which goes all the way to the Edge. Other path on map keeps disappearing. From Edge no paths seen and pretty horrible. | destaylor | 19/07/2015 |
Crowden -> Featherbed Moss -> Chew Reservoir -> Hoarstone Edge -> Black Chew Head -> Black Hill -> White Low. Not recommended in anything but dry weather, very boggy in places once off the paved path! From Featherbed moss I'm certain that heading north to the track by the reservoir rather than trying to cross over Windgate Edge saved a bit of time/discomfort, also allows you to walk along the edge itself which is far more interesting :) | the_adam | 18/07/2015 |
The edge provides better tumps and views than from here! | arranc | 03/06/2015 |
With Josh on a 7.5 mile round route. Came down off Indian Head which would be better as an ascent. | simon and co | 09/11/2014 |
