On marked trails from Mabie Forest car park to col at 931107. Good path then leads NW almost to the summit.Winterfloodian10/09/2024
From layby on the A711. Road to Woodhead then gravel road to 9310-7107. Followed path to the top then a fight through trees and windfell to the heigh point. then back to 9310-7107. from there over to Cuil Hillsmocks and denims21/05/2024
Approached from from the S with parking area at NX93294 69143. Good forest track until final section involving some minor pushing through trees to the reach the two cairns. Then visited the new alternative high point at NX92775 71289, which the GPS read as slightly higher. After, continued to Lochbank Hill. Beautiful weather, with warm spring sunshine.Rod M24/03/2024
Parked layby A711. Followed forestry tracks around and then up bike trail to near top. Found small cairn.colazione03/02/2024
Solo trip. Not sure I got to exact top (fallen trees/ storm damage)Invicta1427/05/2022
Parked beside the A711 and walked up past Woodhead house and followed the track until we came to the MBT this came out a short distance from the top.Fellhugger30/01/2022
Parked NX91497166, crossed busy A711, followed tracks to NX9310871072, then path/mountain bike trail to NW which passes with 20m of summit.PeteF10/09/2021
From layby on A711. Summit cairn just a few meters back from clearing at top of bike trackconanharrod19/08/2021
Parked on the Dalbeattie Road. Made my way up past Woodhead Farm and over rough ground to hilhead Hill and then various bike tracks to the summit. Descended more directly via a different bike track. About 90 mins up and down.jigglybones06/04/2021
Second visit, following awful outings to Marthrown and Craigbill. A pleasure in contrast, with the cycle route to near the high pointColin Crawford18/08/2020
With Alfie. Lay you on A711, 200yds N of Woodhead. Followed gravel road then bike track to summit from west. Second, bigger cairn, furthest from track is highest point. Descended on better track to east and visited trig on Marthrown Hill.Dangerous Dave02/02/2020
2 of 3: Ascent almost as GerryBowes. Layby a few metres further NE seemed safer. Used an extraction track for the last bit. Coming down I used the bike trails starting north and guessing correctly at the junctions until above the forest road. Down an extraction track to join it at 92087 71398.ChrisR21/10/2019
If you draw a straight line from Woodhead Hill to Marthrown Hill, then were the line crosses the forestry track between the two is pretty much where a footpath/bikepath takes you easily to the summit, avoiding forestry and felling until the very top. There are two cairns on top, I built up the furthest one from the path as it looks slightly higher.summitter06/09/2019
From Woodhead Farm. Followed forest roads around to pass between this and Marthrown Hill. Just after small tarns is a Mountain bike track which leads to summit ridge. Summit is just off this track at obvious high point. Recently felled area which has young trees planted so it will become less easy as these trees growtrimarc224/08/2018
Park on A711 layby nx918718. Look for path at nx 9260170544 and follow easy path all the way to the top.G0HIO28/05/2018
Layby just east of Woodhead Farm. Up track, then shortcut along wall uphill (open wood) to mountain bike track, then keeping to highest uphill when splits. Open area felled at top not far from tracks.N.Morters27/04/2018
Drove forest roads to NX 93038 70519 from where did the hill and then across to the trig. With Alex C.jonglew21/03/2018
Easy enough early morning amble for my first Scottish hill of the year.Alex C21/03/2018
The voie normale. Look for the first mountain bike path heading up left from the logging road, and follow it up the hill. Then take the steeper bike path going up through trees and dead trees higher up.Gill08/12/2017
Followed Gerry Bowes instructions - makes it a pleasant stroll - thanks. Cairn now on fallen tree.SS15/10/2017
From layby on A711 200m NE of Woodhead, forest road all the way round to SE of summit, old ATB track to very near top, easy enough.agentmancuso12/08/2017
Route as per dbb, quick and easy. Interesting cairn position. Weather awful, torrential rain, but then that was why I was doing this hill.garyhoney02/08/2017

As an alternative to following the wall you can take the mtb track starting at the junction by the house which takes you all the way to the wall at the col, thereafter various mtb tracks take you to the summit.AndrewFinnimore16/04/2017
Along the tracks past Woodhead Farm, later bike trails, plus some short-cuts through the woodland. The top has been felled and replanted, leaving the ground rough. No summit features, so went by the reading on the GPS, which looked to be the highest point.martin_hall08/04/2017
With Iain - brash nightmare but were close enough to count it as a bag. First unsuccessful visit with Sam 09/05/2016.iangpark25/03/2017
Parked in the layby near Woodhead. Headed along the track towards but not as far as Lochaber Cottage, then freestyle up through pleasant and not very dense forestry after the wall. At the first path turned right along it for about 300m, then up the narrow but easy MTB trail to the devastated felled area at the top. Tramped around a bit and found the tree stump with the small cairn (barely a small pile of stones). Had a good look around and couldn't see anywhere higher. Not too bad at all, I've had far worse.Owen B03/11/2016
Repeat w Jenx, park opp farm by letter box. Tracks to get into woods, when past the wall descending the hill take a bearing for the top and just go for it. Cross a track on the way, then continue into cleared area. Small cairn on a tree stump is the high point, several other possibles. The MTB tracks can be used to aid progress but not necessary.nordicstar15/10/2016
It works well to cut up through the forest after the wall, and very pretty.jenx15/10/2016
Parked on road (12:50), walked past farm into forest round hairpin at 926705 to NX92428 71161 and then MTB track out of trees to cleared summit (13:35). Directly back down through trees; not too difficult; finish 14:05. Clear.dbb29/09/2016
As gerrybowes - there's a small cairn but not on the summit - the GR is accurate.Chris Peart18/07/2016
From Forestry Commission car park (£) N of Mabie House. Forest tracks followed to W side of hill, then up the MTB trail as described by others. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/marilyning-around-dumfries.htmlGayle05/05/2016
With Lex and Bex from the layby at 918718. Followed GB's instruction and mooched about to find the summit.bolton09/08/2015
Parked in layby at 918718 – SW along road for about 200m to Woodhead entrance – Along forest roads to 926705 – Turned left up path (shown as a track on OS maps) & continued along path/track to NX92428 71161 – From here a narrow mountain bike trail leads to within 40 metres of the devastated summit. (S)gerrybowes01/08/2015
parked in a lay by on the A711, then to woodhead farm and up through woods following a wall then mtb tracks to top, felled trees now on the summit.robertphillips09/11/2014
Overcast, dry, calm, good views, top now part felled.iangalbraith06/02/2014
From Mabie House to NX930712 then up old MTB tracks to NX927713. The machete way through too summit.GmacT06/10/2013

From Mabie Forest CP. Summit area has much windthrow including one trunk on top of small cairn near a cycle track with ladder-type ramp.neimcv26/06/2013
Tried 6/52 ago from Mabie Car Park but unsure if reached the top. This time from Woodhead Farm. Followed landrover track as far as possible then a MTB track then cut through dense connifers to a Trig Point and old cut off legs of a Fire Control Tower. This is Marthrown Hill. 1 1/2 hoursalexmaclennan15/06/2013
from Marthrown of Mabie bunkhouse, followed blue then yellow then brown trails then cut up W. Summit surrounded by impenetrable windfelled timber. Really dire.Thearlaichdubh30/05/2013

W Jenx from Woodhead farm, lay by on road. Track through woods b4 ascending obvious high ground via mtn bike trails. High point / small cairn on edge of dense tree cover (high pt?). Direct back NW down hill through trees to nr startnordicstar04/03/2012
Ascent from west side with AT, mainly by mountain bike trails.Man of Kernow125/06/2011
Unable to join MT and AT on this one due to car breakdown, I tried it later that evening. I found the directions hard to follow in failing light. Neglecting to note the 10 figure grid reference, I was lucky to find the summit cairn in the forest.Topographer5725/06/2011
Fr layby on A711 nr Woodhead. Track contours hill, then up through woods, mountain bike area. Then trails and GPS to summit. Devastation and snapped off trees, undergrowth, and small cairn.Aye Jimmy30/03/2011

An easy walk generally along tracks on a hill which is designed for mountain biking. Although there is no marked cycle route to the top, there is actually a faint cycle path leading to the summit from the track at NX930712.chriswatson26/03/2010
