Up track as others. At hairpin bend with small tree sculpture faint path followed to top. | PeteF | 08/09/2024 |
up the forestry road almost to top which is inside fenced off area | BLACKHILL | 04/10/2023 |
Parked at start of logging track and up from there. | Alan Caine | 24/06/2023 |
Parking place and track as jonglew. We followed through newly planted unmapped forestry to just beyond the high point of the track at around NT324173 where there is a small quarried area with an inviting ramp leading to the ridge from which it is easy to follow across unplanted moorland to the summit. Bizarrely there is a small copse of broadleaf saplings around the immediate summit area which could make life difficult once they start growing. | ColinW | 30/03/2023 |
Same parking spot and route of ascent as jonglew. Back same way. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 21/12/2022 |
Solo. Parked on north side. Track extends to bealach, then onto tussocky ankle catching planted area. Lovely piece of sculpture on one of the bends. On this date , September 22, gate could be opened. | VerySlowPlodder | 11/09/2022 |
Parked start of track N side cattle grid (NT 3184 1631). Through unlocked deer gate, followed new forest road, which has been considerably extended beyond its mapped 600m. Stayed on it for 2km to NT 3226 1707 where I peeled off to head for the summit in very dreich weather. On to Stanhope Law -> Wedder Lairs -> Home Law and return for a very wet 11.5km round. | jonglew | 19/10/2021 |
With J on a showery day. After Turner Cleuch Law, intended to continue to the Wiss but route described by others to that hill looked impractical due to logging operations. As the A708 was shut on the N side & neither of us like the look of the bog to get to Carsons Cleuch, we pushed off for Cacra Hill instead. Parked at entrance of new forestry track on N side of burn at cattle grid. Hillside has been extensively planted with new forestry which will impair the view in due course. Track continues to col between Cacra Hill & Stand Knowe. A stile over the deer fence allows access to the latter & then back for the lumps of Cacra Hill. Top carpeted in mushrooms. Agree with ChrisR that true summit may not be where assumed. | NotReallyABagger | 04/10/2021 |
From 318163 up forestry road and along ridge as previous. | daviemore | 17/09/2021 |
1 of 2: Parked near the cattle grid at 318163. We continued on the new road beyond the quarry and then up through tree planting to what appeared to be the HP at 321173. then across to the 3 stones which measured and looked lower!. Direct line back to the road. With Karen. | ChrisR | 10/07/2021 |
Parked just inside entrance to vehicle track on N. side of burn at NT 3184 1630 - Through unlocked gate in deer fence & up winding road to quarry in col at 324173 - Up steep ATV track at back of quarry & then made way along ridge making use of bits of ATV track & path. A short walk N. up from path to the small pile of stones on the summit mound. (S) | gerrybowes | 23/06/2021 |
As others from the cattle grid at 318163. Actually took the track to the right of the stream up to a green hut, then cut across to the deer fence where animal tracks lead all the way along the fence up to the col where the new track from the LHS of the stream ends. Easy crossing of the deer fence at the col over some wooden slats, then along the ridge to the summit. On the return retraced steps to near the top of the track and followed the big track down. 3.25 miles round trip 1hr 15 return. Probably would be quicker to go up and down the main forestry track but actually slightly further as it wiggles about more than my ascent route. Onto Law Kneis. | JulieB | 31/05/2021 |
Used the road starting at 31825 16315. Extensive planting means that this might become the only feasible route in years to come. Makes for an easy ascent to just below pt466. At a quarry a rough vehicle track rears up 10m or so and continues as an ATV track. Approaching the top the saplings converge so there may be a bit of a fight to get through them when they grow up. | Clach Liath | 10/09/2020 |
Solo trip. Dreich. New tree planting will impede access to summit in a few years' time. | Invicta14 | 17/07/2020 |
Took new track from southern end (parked at cg) - gate unlocked. Followed to high point then pleasant walk to summit. Cut last top corner by taking lightly used atv track on return. It might be a scar but it doesn't half make for fast ascents. PS there is a climb over point on the deer fence at the high point of the road. | SS | 11/06/2020 |
Road closed at Cacrabank. Parked near Tushielaw Inn and walked up hill from W. 30mph winds on top. | Rounsfell | 14/03/2020 |
Used new track then ATV tracks to summit. Best to start on the track opposite Cacrabank farm. Through gate, then left, soon right onto ATV track. Nice simple hill, and a lovely sunrise this morning. | PGCE | 27/02/2020 |
Parked just off road at 312168 and got through the new forestry fence at a gate 3123316849. Then an easy but steep climb to the top. 40 mins up and down | Simon Winton | 06/02/2020 |
From B711 at NT318163. Went up the nice track on the S bank of March Sike far enough to ascertain that the very secure deer fence goes round the back of the summit so returned and walked up the very new, still ugly forest track (no trees yet) to access pasture tops to the HP. There is a TuMP bagging bulldozer here, tracks across the still grassy HP. There's a stile across the fence at its top (NT324173) top so you should be able to access Stand Knowe from the HP, though we went back down the forest track. With Pete. A rather unsatisfactory day as we tried to go up Ward Law via a path shown on the N side of Thirlstane Burn, overgrown but ok at NT281154- later so close to impassable that we decided to give up on Ward Law hill today. | pwheeler | 21/09/2019 |
A steep climb from the new (and ugly) new track bulldozed from Cacrabank. | summitter | 15/08/2019 |
#660. Parked as others - 318164. Up S side of burn, down on N side which has forestry prep in progress. (deer fences & road building) | tim747 | 01/07/2019 |
From B711. Long way up using ATV track, then short way down, dead-heading towards gate. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2019/05/monday-29-april-cacra-hill-nt317173-471m.html | Gayle | 29/04/2019 |

Parked at large area before bridge. Up good track on map which continues further north than shown and becomes ATV track which leads to ridge quite a bit east of summit. 3 stone cairn a little different from Ward Law. Back due south to road initially on rough ground. Just under an hour | Coinneach | 01/04/2019 |
From the bridge. The Limousin Luing cross cattle were lively but moved away. | Lionel Bidwell | 26/11/2018 |
From bridge. Up following tractor track. Gale force wind and rain. With PM. | CJM | 09/10/2018 |

Cacra Hill, Stanhope Law, Wedder Lairs & Home Law from double track to S of Cacra. Up track and W along ridge. | agentmancuso | 22/04/2017 |
From the B711 south west of the summit. Steep and grassy ascent to the left of Red Scar. Electric fence signs at the bottom but if it was electric I got away with it. | Owen B | 16/04/2017 |
Parked and ascended from track to the south. Stand Knowe is a more interesting summit. | JohnW | 04/04/2017 |
From gate at NT 3132 1676. Across Cacra Bank then Rabbits Hole then east to the summit. Advised against accessing hill from Cacra Cottage by the farmer due to grazing bull. | G4OBK (Phil) | 27/07/2016 |
From Dugswell2mobile parked by Cacraside track entrance, looped over the summit to return to the road at Cacrabank. | Smudge | 02/10/2015 |
parked at the CG near cacrabank, through gate up steep slope to the top. nice views all round. | robertphillips | 21/02/2015 |
there is limited parking, about five hundred metres from the bridge, for a couple of cars (watch the farmers gate). I accessed the hill from the track at Gd: 305174 there is a new looking bungalow that is not marked on the map, the public footpath goes to the left. The owners of the bungalow do not seem to welcome walkers so make sure you don't wander accidentally onto their driveway (it is not obvious where the path goes until you are on top of it). despite the sullen owners of the bungalow who growled at my cheery wave I had a great short walk. it is a cracking little hill and i was lucky to be blessed with nice weather. The views were extensive. | thenomad | 06/09/2014 |
Parked off B711 and took track by March Sike and then easily up to summit | AndrewFinnimore | 02/09/2014 |
Directly up from Cacraside track. | Chris Peart | 26/03/2014 |
Fine little early morning hill from 305 175 right of way, then straight up the hill. Mainly short grass and dry. Nice little summit. Then on to Ward Law | Thearlaichdubh | 13/10/2013 |
solo after row with Jamie | vegibagger | 31/07/2013 |
Parked at 313168 and made directly up steep and short grassy slope to summit. Weather mild and dry but overcast with gale force wind on summit. | Topographer57 | 05/01/2013 |
w Jenx, as Dugswell route, cold frosty day, -3C and brilliant sunshine. Stayed night b4 at Tibbie Shiels, after 3 M 's day before. Single stone on top still there despite lots of quad bike and landrover activity nr summit. | nordicstar | 02/12/2012 |
