Alec Heenan and Barry McGarahan. 1st walk with the boys in while. Gloriously sunny walk, very hot, walk in was hard work on Finn and coached him to get a drink at every burn. All in all took around 5 hours. Heard the thunderstorms on the top but by then we were well on our way back to the car. It's a nice easy up and down, with an obvious path to follow. Walk in to start ascending took a little over an hour.ian-e18/05/2024

From the car park at the top of Glen Esk, where we slept overnight in our Delica (very peaceful - only one tent guy at the other end). Formal hard path all the way to the rocky top. Busy at the top with people on their phones, talking loud enough to hear them in Ballater :) Soaked our feet, lolling by the burn at the well, in the sunshine.Toby-and-Dion23/08/2023

Glen Esk route from large free carpark at base. Track all the way, though the gravel repairs are water eroded into ruts in many places. Last 100 m is over a boulder jumble. Trig on top with HP adjacent. Started in sunshine and summited in heavy rain, cloud and wind with nil visibility but busy. Descended via sim to E and pt 664m tump in much improved weather.Denise 17/09/2022

Walked solo. Standard tourist route from Invermark car park via Glen Mark cottage, Ladder Burn and the Mounth road. Return same way. Easy route on a wide track with the scenery gradually improving with height. Summit is a stony and heathery dome sitting on a high plateau. Despite its dull reputation, there are superb views over the eastern Cairngorms, Mounth and Angus glens to the coast. Lochnagar is particularly impressive. Weather dry and mostly sunny. Time 6 hours.jamessteel10012/08/2019

From parking area at end of public road in Glen Tanar (NO 47396 95636). Very long approach but easy walking on a well-surfaced track, some excellent work being done re-constructing the ascent path from the footbridge at NO 406895 to the summit. Would recommend a mountain bike to cover the distance between the car park and the footbridge above!david23020103/07/2019

Simple walk from Glen Mark on a late summer's day but still very bracing wind on top.steveroberts18/09/2016
Climbed with Lucy (the dog). A dry climb for a change, with a clear top offering great views. Wide easy to follow path from Invermark all the way to the top. Tried cycling for the first few kilometers, but the loose stones and gravel in the path was unsuitable for a hybrid bike. Mountain bikes seem to manage OK, but would involve a lot of pushing after the first 5 kms.honey badger29/08/2016

Solo fr Glen Esk; d home 8:20pm, plenty of short stops, left car 7.15am, back at car before 11am. Mostly stately running, slow and a bit stiff, just walked the steepest mile. Light dusting of frozen snow, mostly clear skies but mist cap on actual summit. Down to kill time in Brechin then to guesthouse just N of Kirriemuir.NorfolkPT2129/03/2016
Cycled through the native pine forest up Glen Tanar to the steel foot bridge at the foot of the Mounth Road. 407896. Walked up over a few soft snow patches to the trig pillar atop red granite rocks. Over cast but fantastic views. The bike ride back was worth doing on its own - slightly down hill with the wind behind me.mindlessflogger23/03/2016
Started from Ballater in murky conditions. Began climbing through Glen Muick estate, broke out of the gloom into bright sunshine at c. 480m below Craig Vallich. Route up to the fenceline on Lach na Gualainn is very much a trace, and very soggy. Rocky track easily followed down, but tricky to find again on reaching the Burn of Garbh Choire. Elfwalked over snow down into the glen. The bank beyond the bridge had not endured the floods well, with a good section of path missing. Ascent taxing with sections of the path jammed up with deep snow. Joined the only walker I met that day on the snowfields below the summit. Ptarmigans, and Lochnagar looking grand, elsewhere not so much. Back through Glen Tanar. Took a bit of a detour, and joined the Firmounth beneath Belrorie Hill, soon leaving that for the Tillycairn road, and then a path through the nature reserve that ended in sight of Dinnet.Fear-allabain16/03/2016

After a three year gap, Mt keen was my choice for a return to Munroing. Took my bike and picked up 10 geocaches en route. On a Ballater-Glen Markie-Glen Doll- Braemar- Loch Avon- Aviemore walking tour. First day, the weather looked like it couldn't be worse, rain and cloud on low hills at Aboyne. However, it was dry with a 2000 ft cloud base at Ballater. I got over to Glen Tanar where the inevitable rain had started, went over Mount Keen in a deluge and poor visibility but route finding was very easy and I had a nice stay at the House of Mark- an old manse where I was given scones and tea a few years ago on a recce. I had to stay there after such a welcome and was rewarded with a lovely room and roast grouse after this walk.pwheeler12/06/1999
