Parked at Castell y Bere and did Foel Caerberllan first coming down to Caerberllan farm. From there crossed the Pont Ystumanner and took the bridleway SE and the overgrown path NW up to the ruin of Pen-y-bryniau. Followed the fence line SW for another 300m to reach a field gate and a grassy ascent to the corner of the forest and access land. From there crossed a newish bwf into the access land and up to the top. The hp is a short distance into the woods. In the woods there were signs of recent selective harvesting of trees. Descended the same way. Solo. My 100th Welsh Marilyn.richard6907/06/2024
Parked at road junction to north. Up Foel Caerbellan first then back on road over bridge, along bridleway then up track to fence which then followed very steeply uphill to forest. Top short way into forest.PeterD05/09/2023
Tucked in by the phone box, room for one car and then took the ROW at Pont Ystumanner and followed the ridge. Initially through pasture then rougher farmland.Peterb16/04/2023
After Ffridd Cocyn.A very helpful track through the woods leads almost to the summit of Gamallt. I followed it out of the woods and down to the farm Rhiwerfa. Met a very friendly German Shepherd with a rather less friendly farmer.nicolajane29/10/2022
A good track from Llanllwyda gave quick access to the Birds' Rock(s), then a series of ROWs and field crossings to take in Pen Rhiwerfa and Pen Coed-y-gof. Finally, we doubled back to climb Gamallt from the west, via sheep and cow fields then following edge of the forest. Returned NW along the ridge before dropping to a ROW back to the start.summitter31/05/2022
After Foel Caerbellan. Parked at crossroads at 662080. Along road over bridge, then along bridleway along side of river to track up valley onto ridge. Steep climb up ridge to summit. 57 mins to top, Returned by crossing fence at corner of forest and heading around track to the left then down to a gate left of the ruined building. Then across to footpath leading back to Pontystumanner. With KeithByTheCJulieB31/12/2021
Parked at junction to n, opposite phone box. Along flooded bridleway. Awkward for 20 metres. Doubled back along track and up nw ridge by new bw fence. Descended over that fence to gate sw of ruin. Then down RoW. Good route off. KeithByTheC31/12/2021
From the back of the chapel over the footbridge then uncomfortably steep open ground to 200m, where I crossed the BWF into the thin larch forest. Debris mostly cleared, sort of paths through the rye grass. Down through the forest all the way on a steep path.Topographer5714/07/2021
From Abergynolwyn. Chapel by bridge at Cwrt, over footbridge, then using animal tracks where possible on steep open ground until forced to follow fence/ wall by thick bracken. At a R turn in the fence at ca. 200m, I crossed the BWF into partly cleared larch forest and followed a path through rye grass to the summit knoll. I continued along the ridge over a knoll until the end of the access land, then picked out the easiest route across pastures round the ruin of Pen-y-brinau to join the RoW, waymarked with gates, down to Rhiwlas.pwheeler14/07/2021
from campsite at llanllwyda at foot of hill. Paths through fields then rough ground. Distinct highpoint on rock outcrop in thinned forestry. Descend east along wood edge and back along valley trackrichardrosser17/06/2021
Parked on B4405 at 674067 SW of Abergynolwyn. Uncomfortable steep climb from PRow at 673071 with judy55cat. Took one hour to reach summit area at edge of sparse woodland. Operated ham radio for SOTA on summit using short wave and Morse Code.G4OBK (Phil)13/06/2021
park abergynolwyn station up thru plantation tracks and paths all way to top ok but steepunderhill07/04/2021
Parked in Abergynolwyn. Over little bridge behind chapel. Brutally steep over first section, progressively getting heavy bracken, thrashed up but should have gone into forest earlier to track, beg to differ with Norman here it would save lots of bracken fights in summer/autumn. The first section between wall and wire fence, later forestry basic track. As long as you stay close to fence ie any right branches it brings you very close to summit area. 2/2 Marilyn, damp but very humidN.Morters23/07/2020
Parked in the village. Do not be tempted into the forestry until the last minute - timber extraction tracks are deep, wet and very muddy. Stay outside the fence.NormanW27/02/2020
From Abergynolwyn on footpath, then steeply up along edge of wood.Winterfloodian15/09/2019
Bryn-crug - Ffridd Cocyn - Ffridd Cocyn E Top - Foel Tyddyn y Berllan - Pen Coed-y-gof - Pen Rhiwerfa - Birds’ Rock - Birds’ Rock NW Top - Gamallt - Abergynolwyn - Foel Cae’rberllan - Abergynolwyn.Mark Jackson27/08/2019
From phone box. Similar route to Father Ted and bolton also returning by easier grassy slopes to ruined cottage.Susan Bidwell01/05/2019
Roadside parking in Abergynolwyn; took RoW to SH 6741 0707 whence steeply up following fence then wall. Track through woodland, lot of forestry work going on near the top.jonglew07/10/2018
3/3 Marilyn day. Ascent of Foel Cae’rberllan & Gamaalt from Castell y Bere car park. Good views. 11km taking 4 hours, a lot of steep ascents and descents! (S)silveracorn_alan12/08/2018
From Abergynolwyn, on street parking. Onto the bridleway, then up the fence. This hill is basically just a cliff with grass and moss on it and trees on top. Easy enough though. Pog up grass and dead bracken (would be awful if it was growing). Reach a wall and follow it. Once the gradient starts to ease off, where the wall turns a corner and the forestry fence begins, cross the fence where the BW has been removed. A few yards into the forestry (follow the wall), there is a very good path which goes to the top more easily than heading up the north side of the fence (I tested both).Gill20/04/2018
Parked and walked from Abergynolwyn, basically following the ridgeline fence all the way. Weather turned foul, so plans for Craig Aderyn and Ffridd Cocyn were dropped! Continued north from summit for a slightly less steep desent.huwthomas02/04/2018

Yes, this one isn't very high but is challenging. Parked by the phone box to the North then down the FP on the west side of the river till the Open Access land is accessed via a pallet gate then UP. I took my walking poles which helped. After gaining most of the necessary height I turned SE onto the ridge and then its just over a few hillocks and over a fence into the woods to reach the high point. Coming down is a bit easier with gravity assistance.Father Ted05/10/2017
difficult to get to, and don't give a lot away with open access to east slopes ! accessed off track west side of peak, there is a newish track going into wood high spot in plantation ,very steep descent into abergonolwynjohnowen17/06/2017
Parked opposite the phone box at SH 66269 07972. Straightforward walk as previously described.martin_hall30/05/2017
With Trefor. From bridge. Followed bridleway then a steep pull onto ridge which was followed steeply up to forestry. Summit easily found in small clearing in forestry.mike.hoult08/08/2016
From Castell y Bere via Foel Cae'rberllan. Followed bridleway from Pont Ystumanner as far as access land then straight up very steep slope to summit.Tony J09/07/2016
2nd of 5. From the often used Bridge starting point. This blighter seemed tougher than Foel Cae'rberllan. Aimed for the dead house then followed the steep grassy slopes up to the first knoll. From here hopped over fence and up to highest point of the open access area. The actual top then requires a hop over b/wire into trees.. a bulldozed track gets you pretty much all the way. Shame theres very little view. Heather burning on cad Idris. Followed bulldozed tracks a way down through the trees just to explore and vary the route but you're as well to retrace your steps. Off to Ffridd Cocyn next.stig_nest28/02/2016

Just missed Anne and the others at the top. We parked at the bridge to the north.jenx15/11/2015
A repeat to help Anne Bunn be the first woman to complete all the Marilyns (except for the St Kilda stacks). The malt was the incentive.Martin R15/11/2015
Part of AnnBunn' s final mainland Marilyn party. 2nd ascent for meDenise 15/11/2015
Ann Bunn's final Marilyn bar two stacs...group of fourteen of us. Surprisingly it stayed dry for the walk up to the open but sheltered wooded summit.vegibagger15/11/2015

Parked on the bridge at 660078. Headed along the bridleway south east before a tough climb to the ridge from 664074. A very pleasant summit. 2.1 miles over 95 minutes. Returned down the ridge to the ruined cottage with GB.bolton30/10/2015
Parked by bridge at 65988 07870 – SE along bridleway to 663037 & then up to pallet gate – Continued up steep slope to ridge – Followed fence up ridge before entering forest clearing where the summit knoll is clearly visible. (PM)gerrybowes30/10/2015
Parked at the castle and used bridleway to Caerberllan farm and road to PontYstumanner. Walked SE along FP next to the river to were a pallet gate gives access to the steep rough slopes. Gained ridge and up to the top were we went under the forest fence to the true summit. Back the same way but at 666079 used a metal gate to go up Foel Caerberllan.mindlessflogger10/10/2015
Simple bag from bridge to N, then wander through the treesThearlaichdubh15/09/2015
Quick up and down for this bag today as I was rushing to beat the bus back from Aberystwyth.Alex C25/08/2015
From Abergynolwyn, followed edge of forest to with 100yds then into forest for summit. Shame top has no veiw, good view from forest edge.rhalstead20/03/2014
THIS STARTED OUT EASY ENOUGH, BUT IF YOU DOING THIS HILL, MAKE SURE YOU DONT GET SEEN BY THE FARMER AS HE HAD A WORD, AND ASKED US TO LEAVE, THERE WAS NO WAY UP THE HILL, NEVER WAS ETC... wE WALKED ALL THE WAY ROUND ON THE ALLOWED FOOTPATHS, UNTIL WE GOT TO THE COMMON LAND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HILL. EASTtallblond02/08/2013
Parked in Abergynolwyn. Took path alongside Afon Dysynni, then up steep slopes to trees. Followed boggy path to near summit area.Sprog02/11/2012
From the bridge to the north as described by others. Quite steep but top is clearly visible through the trees when you approach the top opf the fence.clivevilla09/09/2012
Parked by bridge at SH 65988 07870 and took bridleway to start of slanting grassy track at SH 66321 07347. Track eventually fizzles out then it's a very steep ascent following a fence.David Gradwell24/08/2012
Ascended from Pont Ystumanner by the north west ridge. A fine hill in a picturesque setting.JohnW25/07/2012
from Pont Y to north easy if quite steep ascentgigglejon26/03/2012
Easy climb from the north with good views....until you get to the summit! Decided the peaks to the west looked better so did a pleasant circuit to Birds Rock and the impressive remains of the hill forts before dropping back down to Tyn y Bryn.signyred28/10/2011

From Pont Ystumanner (16:50), steeply up footpath to ridge, through meadow with cows and up steep undulating ridge to summit - knoll in clearing just inside forest. Back by same route; finish 18:10dbb11/10/2010

Parked at Pont Ystumanner. Track by river until trees cleared, delightful path up through bracken to broad ridge. Fence leads eventually to high point to L of trees. Summit to side in clearing, on ridge.Aye Jimmy20/06/2009
As Gary Honey, take path to right of cottage, then aim for style & then ruined building before ascending hill to SE. Summit in clearing in forest, barbed wire peels back to aid access.Dugswell201/06/2009
From North. Summit a knoll in the trees. Luckily it has been cleared.destaylor31/03/2009
Walked solo in the morning. Started walking towards Aberganolwyn(sp?) and made way up to the top, using sheep tracks. Very steep. Good clear views to Cader. Also spotted Red Kites, lovely!Fwapp23/08/2008
SOTA activation, trees are tricky when finding summit!Ian G7KXV11/10/2006
Parked by Pont Ystumanner and took path SW. At appropriate point made a direct ascent up the ridge to the summitgaryhoney20/08/2006
A quick but steep climb up grass slopes. Despite the low height of 288m, I slogged up and was knackered at the top.Jhimmy09/07/2004
From Abergynolwyn. Very steep and summit in thick forestry.robphys11/04/2004

With: solo; From Abergynolwyn I followed the bridle track on SW side of Afon Dysynni for about 0.5km the headed back up to the very steep E ridge of Gamallt up to the top. Summit is inside the forest but wasn't too hard to locate in young trees.Ian Baines19/09/2002

On signed path around small farmhouse and up on grass sheep pastures to lumpy ridge. Downs as well as ups and 2 or 3 wire fences to forest edge - about 950' uphill. Highest point by fence has trees to S. 20m further and over fence, a gap in trees leads into forest uphill to moss covered rocky outcrop. No view - wood.arranc30/05/1999
fine climb with lovely views NE to talyllyn, view from summit fine but being obscured as spruce & pine grow up [dec02 view now obscured M.Trengrove]. from abergynolwen to E RHW15/11/1998
South of Cader -a tough punishing wonderful solo outing-running the lonely ridges between lonely tops above big slopes. 2000ers & Deweys AND the two marilyns north of Abergynolwyn to round off a satisfyingly tough outing.
