Climbing solo today. Excellent sunny weather and visibility. Tanygrisiau (good parking) - Cwmorthin Quarry - Craig Nyth-y-Gigfran - Allt Fawr - Moel Druman - Llyn Terfyn - Llyn Cwm Corsiog - Bwlch y Rhosydd (quarry) - Llyn Cwmorthin - Tanygrisiau. Good access on quarry tracks, but quite rough and boggy going on the hills, with indistinct paths and terrain that would be confusing in mist (especially between Moel Druman and Bwlch y Rhosydd). Stunning views though from the tops taking in most of Snowdonia. WARNING. To NW of summit of Craig Nyth-y-Gigfran are some enormous fissures (result of quarrying/mining?). They are very narrow in places and could easily be covered by snow bridges in winter, but lead to chasms hundreds of feet deep. Be very careful here.jamessteel10014/08/2024

1/4 Dewey day. Parked in the car park above Tanygrisiau (SH 683 454), walked up towards Llyn Cwmorthin, taking zig zag track before white building up through the spoil heaps, then track to ridge. Then headed NW up the ridge to the fissured summit. Back the same way. 4.7km there and back, with 310m ascent in 1h30m.silveracorn_alan18/04/2022

Parked at the lower car park at 68323 45195 and walked up through the Quarry when reaching the building by Llyn Cwmorthin I turned right and used tracks through the slag heaps and onto a path up to the top of the ridge where it’s a short stroll left to the summit. One hour forty five for the Two miles.WAYNE ROWLETT20/03/2022
I headed up through Cwmorthin before heading to the summit of Cnicht (690m), Ysgafell ridge (South) (672m), Moel Druman (676m) and then the highest to finish at Allt-fawr (698m) before a steep descent back into the Cwmorthin valley. 22km, solo.meltdiceburg20/06/2021

From bottom of mine road up through disused quarry on tracks until path reached to low col to south of top. Easy stroll past the fissures from there. Excellent view down to Blaenau from cairn to south of same low col. Return by same route - surprisingly varied little hill.SS25/05/2015
Easy parking Tanygrisiau. Took mainly good track and path to the end of the workings - at approximately the height of the lake. There is then an electric fence. Suggest crossing this and then setting off beyond for the col. As others have indicated - it is best walked in good weather/visibility.destaylor17/04/2015
Climbed on a round of Cwm Morthin from Tanygrisiau. Took tracks through slate quarries to just below south shoulder of the hill, then ridge path heading for Allt Fawr. Summit is about 100m to east of this path. As Chris says, beware of very deep fissues in terrain between the ridge path and summit. Could be very dangerous in limited visibility or with snow cover.Man of Kernow118/08/2013

From Tanygrisiau, left the road at the car park by the falls and took an adventurous route up through the crags, the top of which is a tremendous vantage point. I agree with others about the crevices - made for quite nervy going.Jake99422/09/2012
Quick up and down from Llyn Cwmorthin before heading for Moelwyn Mawr North Ridge Top. Some nasty crevices on summit that you wouldn't want to fall into. Electric fence wasn't powered up today.chriswatson14/08/2012
Start ~ 683452. Car park at Tanygrisiau, followed the old quarry track up to the first level then chose a sporting route up through the crags to the south east. Good views from the summit. Descended through the quarry levels to the west. With Wombourne & Ron.steve hudson28/03/2012

Included with Nuttall round from car park at summit of Crimea Pass on A470 (SH 70160 48937)Big detour for this one and it's a pain ascending back to the ridge.David Gradwell19/04/2009
Came up here with my father on our way, unsuccessfully, to M Druman from Tanygrisiau in the late 80s and then with my wife, in 05, by a different route, on way to Allt Fawr and Druman. Weather foul both times. Also have a photo taken high up on this hill, looking down on Cwmorthin, in the late 70s. Not sure if we visited the top then though.Herbert Anchovy31/12/2005
Snuck off from pre-exp w/e for a 5 hour outing /run around 500m tops around Blaenau Ffestiniog. Back through main quarry to west of road -some nasty unfenced slots on this top ! felt exhausted by end - Ecuador trip virus lingering?Chris Pearson30/08/2003
