Mountain biking route. | Rob Rees | 22/02/2024 |
From just north of Abergavenny an anticlockwise loopover the top. Lovely contrast in terrain between the two halves of the route. | JacquiH7 | 07/02/2024 |
With Shaky on a mild but very misty day from small car park at Fro to NE. Followed the path to the summit from there: just as well it was obvious because we couldn't see more than 25 yards. Back the same way & then across to Bryn Arw. Must return on a clear day. | NotReallyABagger | 29/01/2024 |
With y*poor weather conditions/visibility | Fabioski | 25/01/2024 |
Parked at (free) NT car park to NE of Sugar Loaf. Picked up the Cambrian Way to the top of Sugar Loaf, then SE down through the Parc Lodge oak woodland to Bettws and the Bryn Arw ridge and hp. Lovely autumn colours across the valley in the woods in the Coed y Cerrig NNR. Showery start but clearing up later. With Gillian. | richard69 | 04/11/2023 |
Cambrian Way - Stage 4 | geoffh12 | 20/08/2023 |
Parked up just outside of Llanbedr and followed road down to tracks for the black mountains fell race route, up onto Beacons Way and onto Crug Mawr back down into the valley past Forest Coal Pit and up onto Sugar Loaf before descending back down and following roads and tracks back to Llanbedr. Around 12 miles all told | lboutside | 08/08/2023 |

From National Trust car park walked down into St Mary's Vale, up to the eastern slopes for about 20 minutes after sunrise, up to the top where I ate breakfast. Walked down the western side until I hit the limit of the open access land then worked my way back to the start. Solo walk on a sunny day - chilly at summit but soon warmed up. | clyoung | 28/05/2023 |
Steady ascent from small CP at SO29224 20043. It seems few choose this route; much busier at the top. | Newton Maximus | 20/05/2023 |

Third time, first time from the northeast. On a 2 Marilyn, 16 mile Bank Holiday circuit from Abergavenny station. After Bryn Arw, dropped down to Old Coalpit and then joined the Cambrian Way to climb the northeast. Not too bad until the last steep bit, when the unprompted re-ascent started to feel like a bad idea to my creaking knees. Very busy on the top. Descended via Mynydd Pen-y-Fal to revisit the two obscure Bronze Age cairns that don't even appear on the OS map. Seemed a long way back to Y Fenni. | thesweetcheat | 18/04/2022 |

A really good bike/hike day out from Abergavenny today. First new Dodd summit of the year and undoubtedly one of the best in the country. | Alex C | 14/02/2022 |
Trade route after sleeping in van. Stiff breeze, lots of cloud but summits clear. Was to have been 1/7 but van gear selector cable broke in car park. | Rounsfell | 12/02/2022 |
Hiked up from Fro car park. | SootAndShale | 22/01/2022 |
Scenic ascent from Fro. | Wycombe Wanderer | 14/01/2022 |
Absolutely beautiful day, started from car park near Forest Coal Pit, lovely walk, a few steep bits, fantastic views. Dogs loved it :) Watch out for sheep. | Piddbear | 21/10/2021 |
From car park in valley N of Abergavenny, GR 288167. Up and down in 1hr 45min. Lovely views. | IanHHill | 01/10/2021 |
Walked up from the car park at Fro with eldest son (19). Third attempt at seeing a decent sunset from the summit, not third time lucky unfortunately. Nice views nonetheless. | clyoung | 11/09/2021 |

Used Fro car park for short walk incl. Sugar Loaf. Arrived at 9am on Sunday and was first car there, but car park was full when arriving back at 12:30. A bit cloudy, but still some lovely views. | JazDisney | 06/06/2021 |

from car park stroll over maintained paths with Donna views to pen y fan | underhill | 27/11/2020 |
Slept overnight in the camper van at the quiet NT car park on the road between Forest Coal Pit and Bettws. From here we enjoyed a lovely stroll along well maintained grass paths through the bracken, heather, and gorse to Sugar Loaf and Bryn Awr. Very hot. The last day of summer? | summitter | 22/09/2020 |
Walk up from the car park with the family. Gorgeous day hazy blue skies but warm with a moderate breeze. We saw Meadow Pipits, Skylark, Buzzard, Red Kite, Ravens and Crows. Say on the summit for an hour sun bathing. Could see Pen y Fan and Corn Du through the gaze as well as the closer to hand Black Mountains. | isabelle | 20/09/2020 |
Lucky to get the last space in the Porth-y-parc carpark. Followed the gentle National Trust Trail. Grand views from the top, despite a bit of haze. Dropped off the western end to take a wide sweep back to Cwm Trosnant and then on to Rholben. Enjoyable varied walk through woodland, heath and pasture, with streams for company too. | Pete West | 20/09/2020 |
'It was clear when we got here like three minutes ago,' said the people I met on the top... | jabailey314 | 07/09/2020 |
From Upper Bettws car park near Forest Coal Pit. Up path round fields then steeply to busy summit. Great views, 4/7 Marilyn | N.Morters | 26/08/2020 |
The normal car park and mountain road closed due to Coronavirus. So I changed to a new ascent point (for me) with very limited space due to increased demand for parking at SO 288 166. A pleasant approach to the Sugar Loaf from here with varied terrain. Unfortunately low cloud and rain spoilt the summit view. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 23/07/2020 |
From the NT car park. Gorgeous day. With GFE. | Fionalevey | 22/03/2020 |
Took the circular route on the NT website, highly recommend. The Oak woodland you go through before the ascent is absolutely spectacular, and is a very rare landscape in this part of the world. Unbelievable views from the top. | RyParks | 15/03/2020 |
From the free car park to the south at 26845 16729. Three miles in a hour and half. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 18/01/2020 |
