Logged Descriptions  (logged by 26 users)ByDate of Ascent
From dog walkers car park to the south. Headed along footpath signposted Eastern Circular. Loads of wind blown trees but any that had crossed the path have been cut away or removed. Entered hilltop area through metal gate in fence just east of top and followed path round fort a bit before heading up to high point which has been cleared of any gorse bushes and trees. Continued down path to join the circular route on the westside and followed it back to the car park.Jossker16/12/2023
From the car park to the south. Nice ascent with the grandchildren. Lots of wind blown trees which prevented a complete circuit.BigJ01/03/2023
4 of 7: From the CP. Busy with dog walkers. Prepared paths almost to the top which had recently been cleared of gorse. With Karen.ChrisR27/02/2022

From the car park. Bring a machete. Had to force my way through almost impenetrable thickets of whin, broom and bramble near the top. Found better route on descent: if ascending, take Eastern circular route from CP, keep going anti-clockwise along the edge of a deer fence until the fence ends and there's a clearing upwards from some old beech trees. The last bit still requires some tricky thrutching through whin and brambles.sclater14/09/2021
Walk from Huntly Station via paths. Rather overgrown summit area, but lots of similarly high areas in the woods.willyross16/08/2021
easy circuit, lots of interest. Great start to new yearsarahk01/01/2021
Named after a daring raid in 1307 during the Scottish Wars of Independence. The hill is jammed full of archaeological remains (mostly buried stones) including a possible Iron Age hillfort, and a 3000 year old hut circle as well as a potential Neolithic/Bronze Age cairn measuring 20-30m in diameter and up to 3m high! The Battle Hill Prehistoric Landscape Project is in the 20th season of a long-term, relaxed and open series of research and training excavations into Prehistoric Aberdeenshire. The project has to date produced over 12 publications and Dr Murray Cook’s PhD. (Kintore has been his other main area of excavation). The 2019 season identified here a new possible cairn under a 1000 year old bank and revealed more features of the 2500 year old hillfort. Sadly I saw non of this on my after dusk ascent.Chris Pearson30/10/2020
Walked from car park with Kyle (age 2) up path to top.187lenny21/06/2020
Quick ascent between train and bus connections. 20 mins for return trip from station but this does not do justice to a pleasant woodtrimarc220/05/2018
