Logged Descriptions  (logged by 35 users)ByDate of Ascent
On a walk between Freshwater and Brighstone. Open woodland it might be and the top is obvious, but there is a lot of bracken and brambles; best approached from the westColin Crawford23/06/2024
Beneath the glistening sparkling canopy the rusty red squirrels tumbled and twisted entertainingly. (Preposition, adjective, adjective, noun, adjective, adjective, noun, verb, verb, adverb) and alliteration. Common Grammar for Grammar's Common.Chris Pearson09/06/2024
Brambly path leaves RoW at SZ41494 83794. Friendly cows add fun.Martin R12/10/2023
From Mottistone Down car park - late evening walk and no red squirrels seen.Buck10/07/2023
Found good space to park on Strawberry Lane, by fp,at SZ 41278416. We walked into the wood on the RoW, and left it along old fence remains going E on a 'just about' path to the HP. Here, we noticed a track going N as shown on the Explorer map; the track going W back to the RoW existed too, and we finished up having a nice woodland walk with good, open woodland views at the top. Parked on corner to NE, accessed via RoW across field to forest. Followed track to fence - tumble down, and this up to summit. A few fallen trees put me off return N then W on the marked track, so went W then N to retrace the outward route.Minto13/01/2023
From Mottistone Gardens to the Long Stone and then over the lane to Grammar's Common, where RHW's directions still hold. Geocache close to top.milimana28/03/2022
Bus to Mottistone, then walked to Freshwater Bay via Grammar's Common (into wood on ROW, followed it S, then NE on small path direct to summit) , Harboro and Brook Down.PGCE03/12/2021
Great circuit from the NT car park at the top of Strawberry Lane. Up Mottistone Down to Harboro, continuing along the Tennyson Trail to Brook Down. Back to the B3399, turning off at the private road entrance to Brook Hill House. The ROW continues on to Mottistone Common, passing the unusual Long Stone before gaining Strawberry Lane. Going up and back down the track then forest path through the red squirrel sanctuary of Grammar's Common is a pleasant diversion before heading back up Strawberry Lane to the car park. No strawberries or red squirrels spied, but plenty of blackberries and kestrels to sustain stomach and soul.summitter28/09/2021
small grassy clearing between beech and pine trees. Slightly brambly access from path to S; good path north to forest exit. More paths than mapped in private red squirrel reserve- but none seen today, in oven like heat.Denise 09/08/2020
Brambly path from the S or woodland path from the NW. No red squirrels seen.RichardM09/08/2020
From NW with Space for a couple of cars. Up FP into woods. No red squirrels to be seen today, faint track leaves FP and goes all the way to the top.PeterD07/07/2020
Shalfleet to Brighstone. Revisited after missing Dugswell's FBM completion party. Much more brambly than I remember, but then that visit was in early spring.Smudge05/09/2019
Circular walk from Brighstone. Lovely to walk through some woods on this walk approaching Grammar's Common (designated Red Squirrel Sanctuary part of it). Overshot the summit initially (to the SE) then fortunately spotted an obvious path that wound its way to the top.jedthehumanoid22/05/2019
From Car Park at the top of Strawberry Lane for a round of Brighstone Down, Harboro, Brook Down and Grammar's Common.rhalstead30/03/2019
Followed RHW footsteps. First FP very overgrown but fair going along avenues between trees parallel on the RHS. Second FP in ditch easy to find. Top obvious.Moorponder24/09/2018
Followed RHW's directions. Bit of a scramble when leaving RoW. Definite clearing at summit.ngthack11/09/2018

From West. RoW into wood, first L in 50m, first R fork in 150m, reasonably bramble free path to summit. After Harboro, logged out of order.RHW28/02/2016

Up the road from the N.T parking. Across the field and into the wood. Path maintenance team needed for this as it is nearly impassable. No view!Play2End10/06/2015

From car park on Strawberry Lane. Harboro first, then SW on Strawberry Lane to RoW. Soon after entering woodland, summit track led away from RoW. A definite HP in mixed woodland.jonglew12/04/2015
From layby on Strawberry Lane to west. Lots of paths, mostly overgrown apart from ROW which bypasses top!citygent02/06/2014
