After 2 nearby Welsh Marilyns, this was too close to leave. Went up road, track and fp from Rhydycroesau. Forest very quiet, no birdsong. Past shooting? | IanHHill | 21/05/2024 |
From Pentregaer Uchaf. Avoided both farm/ House up the grassy track, round the pond (dodging bullets) into the wooded summit and ruin. 1/6 | N.Morters | 23/12/2023 |
Walk as Gerry Bowes- a nice walk up limestone pastures on RoW then on to summit, the route indicated by the most obvious no RoW and Keep Out sign! Permissive access below ridge is interesting but no help for HP baggers | pwheeler | 02/05/2023 |

Early Morning Ascent from our Air BnB at Pentregaer Uchaf. Really misty and spooky in the woods and summit area. 1 BWF to cross to get into woods. | Jephcote83 | 09/08/2021 |
From Lane to NE along FP, then gate and into woods and up to Ruin and HP | PeterD | 18/06/2021 |
From Pentregaer Uchaf, as others. | PGCE | 22/08/2020 |
As noted by Dugswell2, easy parking to NNE at SJ 24388 30478 - Up track for 300m, over stile & then pleasant walk along RoW to padlocked pedestrian gate at 235292 - Over gate, along edge of plantation, over BW fence & then up through trees to summit boulder by ruin. (S) | gerrybowes | 20/01/2020 |
Footpath along ridge from Rhydycroesau on a fine sunny morning. Where the path turns left I head right into the conifers and up to summit with derelict summer house(?) in Beech and Sweet Chestnut trees. High point mossy boulder on SW side of building. No views, all quiet on the firing range below. | RichardM | 09/01/2020 |
Nice walk from Rhyddycroesau, which has a BM on church. Range is now disused according to a local lady. | ngthack | 19/02/2019 |
Parked in the field by the entrance to Pentregaer Uchaf. Walked past the farm and up by the fence, through gate and more or less directly to the summit building. Very misty.
Had previously rung 01743 741607 to check on Llansilin Range firing and was told it was currently out of action. | Jim.Fothergill | 23/11/2018 |
Misty murk, sheep fields and spooky wood. All very atmospheric. No shooting today. With R and B. | jenx | 22/11/2018 |
From Pentregaer ad others, with Jenx and Bryher. Misty all way, atmospheric in trees and gnarly landscape. From tower dropped into woods and old track out to field used for access | nordicstar | 22/11/2018 |
Parked near Pentregaer. Lovely: the silence broken only by the pitter-patter of raindrops upon leaves and the gentle crack of bullets overhead. | Wycombe Wanderer | 06/09/2018 |
From good parking spot to N as originally mentioned by summitsup. Delightful walk then up into wood. Remarkable multi-trunked trees at top. Two compasses put the summit boulder to the WEST of the ruin! | Aye Jimmy | 15/10/2017 |

1/2 Cleaning up final NW Shropshire Tumps. Second attempt at Craig Y Rhiw. Parked on Road to Pentregair Issa to the south and up towards the 'lake.' NB - At the ruins in the field to the S there was an enormous cow with a calf, which I managed to not disturb. Across Fence to NE of lake, near where a beautiful White horse grazes. The woods are horrible to walk through, made worse by the fear of being shot. The building on the earthworks is creepy and certainly the ground inside it is the highest point, but obviously care should be taken stepping inside. Happy to complete this awkward and unnerving hump! | tumpawumpa | 03/06/2017 |
Easy parking alongside the start of the footpath to the NE (alt 283m). A short track walk then a dodgy stile leading onto a crossfield path. Easy crossing into the woods just before the historic boundary. 4.34 km. 60 minutes. | moorsman | 17/05/2017 |
same as Dugswell2 | Rob50 | 02/04/2017 |
With Minnie from parking 244 305, followed easy paths to treeline over fence & short up hillfort to building & top - spooky woods on top even in daylight. lovely cold morning watched sunrise on the way up, back down same way then to Old Oswestry-impressive. | apricorum | 27/12/2016 |
Good parking off narrow road to the NNE at SJ 24388 30478 then used marked footpath to get to forest edge then ignored sign to gain high point near ruin. A lovely sunny morning and glad that I chose to wear my wellies after a heavy dew. | Dugswell2 | 02/10/2016 |
Parked at SJ236287 then as for RHW, no shooting today. | Rob Pen y Garn | 18/05/2016 |
Nice afternoon but a failed attempt at a local Oswestry tump grab raid. Thought we had found the top but now I learn I should havebeen looking for some ruined building... | tumpawumpa | 07/05/2016 |
Parked at the village hall and walled up the road, through the woodland to the dead house. With stig_nest | Laura.W | 22/03/2016 |
Interesting woodland with many eerie looking trees. | Alex C | 17/02/2015 |
Parking at Pentregaer Issa with farmer's permission. Initially on RoW past Pentregaer Uchaf then field boundaries before crossing b/w fence into military firing range area to summit in woodland. Interesting ruin at HP, perhaps an old watch tower as being border country? Descended to and circumnavigated Llyn Rhuddwyn on return. | jonglew | 24/01/2015 |
Parked at start of track to SE - drove over cattle grid and parked in field. Path through farm to ridge then back across field to enter wood near summit. | Chris Peart | 14/07/2014 |
Parked in front of an old farm tractor, to a second farm walked up field to a BWF followed a narrow field to the left by a stone wall, over a gate up to the edge of a wood, with keep out MOD notices. Over BWF through wood to a derelict house to the crest. GPS confirmed top - rock outcrop 5m from building. No view - trees. 14.50. | arranc | 02/05/2013 |
P halfway up narrow road to PI farm. Across field and through wood. With Brent. | chrisbien | 11/03/2012 |
a circuit from rhydycroesau village hall car park made for a more interesting loop. woods are pretty much open access now, except obviously when the range is open. we came back along the path from derwen deg to pen y dyffryn hotel. | stig_nest | 25/09/2011 |
Parked just north of road end and climbed up field just after Pentregaer. Gunfire and signs a bit offputting! | chriswatson | 30/08/2011 |
keep out of the woods (military firing range) | JohnStoneham | 03/07/2011 |
Parked at end of road to SE. Grass then forest. | destaylor | 28/04/2011 |
Easy walk up, with the added bonus of no gun fire ! only 1 more Shropshire hump to do.

Agree with high spot being the ruined building in the middle of the wood. | andrew brown | 12/12/2009 |
Parked at Pentregaer with difficulty. Somewhat unnerving climbing towards gunfire. There is a small ridge to the NE of the lake which seems to be the top but you have to go in to the forest to find the ruined house which I agree is the top. | clivevilla | 09/12/2008 |
From SJ244304. Rifle fire and keep out notices a little off-putting. Top seems to be the ruined house. Technically the highest bit is inside - but great care is needed for safety. | summitsup | 18/10/2008 |
summit buried in edge of plantn, ruined bldg on long heap of boulders (?tumulus), limest outcrops run N from summit, NB live firing range, was active 20/1/02, visited in rain. park in gateway 238287, FP NW thru farm double back to stile at 233288, tk then thru trees to summit | RHW | 20/01/2002 |
